Leafhoppers are easily controlled with a spray of diazinon, malathion, Sevin, or Orthene.

Carbaryl, sold as Sevin, and Malathion can be used as a spray. A granular formulation of Sevin can also be used as a bait. A microbial insecticide called Nosema locustae is sold under various trade names for grasshopper control.

Insecticides containing BT, malathion or carbaryl will also kill the larvae, but the spraying must be done during the period between hatching and when the worm enters the fruit.

For the most effective control, thoroughly spray your tree(s) every two weeks with Diazinon or malathion, and thin the immature fruits to prevent them from touching.

Recipe #2:
7 part water
1 part Malathion or Sevin
1 part molasses
10 parts wheat bran, corn meal, or other ground grain ...

This is caused by aphids. They are small soft-bodied insects that usually brown, green or red. Often clustered under leaves and flower buds, they suck plant juices from tender buds. Malathion or diazinon spray may help roses to survive these bugs.

Spray weekly with Funginex or Immunox to control powdery mildew and black spot. To rid your roses of insects, use a systemic rose care product such as Malathion, Orthenex, or Diazinon.

My father's solution would have been a good application of Sevin dust-- a product(or its descendant) that is still available. Some people prefer malathion in liquid form sprayed on plants. But other, more environmentally friendly options exist.
