HELP! My confederate jasmine has stuff growing on it that looks like white puff paint. It is mostly on the joints, but a little on the leaves.

 


Mealy bugs are off-white in colour and have oval flattened bodies growing to about 3mm long. Waxy strands that resemble legs occur along the sides of the body and some species also have a long "tail.

Mealy Bugs are small cottony white blobs, usually attached to the plant at the stem joints, but they may also be found along the stems. They make themselves at home and slowly feed off the plants by sucking.

Mealy bugs will be evident by their white cotton like covering. They are usually found in stem axis areas, or on the underside of leaves. If there are only a few, dip a q-tip in alcohol, and use it to remove the insect and cocoon.

Mealy bugs can be a problem. They show up on the undersides of leaves or occasionally on the roots.

- Mealy bugs and scale insects can drain vigour and reduce fruiting. The tree can tolerate small infestations, but spray larger colonies with a pyrethrum-based insecticide.

Spider mites, mealy bugs and scale insects are occasional pests on weeping figs, which are relatively disease free.
Weeping figs don't require frequent fertilization. In fact, excessive nitrogen fertilizer application stimulates lush, spindly growth.

Check often for insect infestations, as hibiscus plants may be bothered by whiteflies, scale, mealy bugs, thrips and aphids. If your plants are infested by aphids or thrips, use a soap spray made by mixing one tablespoon of soap to a gallon of water.

As far as common insects, slugs and snails are often attracted to begonias, as are mealy bugs and spider mites. Prevent mealy bugs by keeping the area well weeded, and avoiding high-nitrogen fertilizers.

Another of the gardenia pests is the mealy bugs. Mealy bugs are the most common gardenia leaf pests you will see. They are white and found in masses along the leaves of the gardenia. They tend to hide themselves along protected areas of the plant.

If plants are infested with leaf mealy bugs, pick the bugs off by hand. If root mealy bugs are a problem, tip the plant out of its pot, wash away the compost, remove the affected roots and repot the plant in fresh compost.

Like many houseplants, Boston ferns are attractive to mealy bugs, scale, spider mites, and other pests. Do not treat your fern with chemical pesticides as this can burn the fronds.

Use a strong water spray to knock off common garden pests, such as white flies, mealy bugs and spider mites. If plants become too infested, try insecticidal soap or neem.

Ficus are susceptible to all of the standard indoor arthropod pests: mealy bugs, spider mites, and both soft and hard scale insects. Employ your favorite biological controls.
