Epimedium in the Landscape
Imagine a group of plants that tolerate shade and drought, thrive on neglect, flower profusely in many colors, are untroubled by pests and disease, and are often evergreen. Wishful thinking? Not at all.

 


Epimedium
The Bishop's Cap or Fairy Wings is an excellent choice to plant in any shade garden.
The lower growing varieties make a great ground cover and 'coverup' for areas which otherwise might remain barren.

The Mediums
Fir Bark is the most popular orchid potting medium. It is inexpensive, fairly light and easy to handle. It has a rough surface and does not compact allowing air and water to be obtained by the plant's roots.

Epimedium × versicolor 'Sulphureum'
You'll never fall in love at first sight with Epimedium the way you might swoon over roses or peonies.

Epimedium , also known as Fairy Wings and Horny Goat Weed, is a genus of over 60 flowering perennial plants, the majority of which are native to south China. The plants have a variety of uses, from gardening to use as an aphrodisiac.

However, it's usually difficult to moisten on its own and is best used with other mediums. This growing medium is ideal for germinating seeds.
Perlite is a form of expanded volcanic rock and is usually white in color.

This is a medium to strong flavored garlic that gets a bit hotter after a month in storage! Yum! It has been reported to have a very high allicin content. Allicin boosts the immune system, supports normal cholesterol levels and aids circulation.

Medium To Bright Light
Polka dot plant (Hypoestes phyllostachya). Use in medium- to bright-light areas. Its speckled foliage adds color and interest to planters and window boxes.
Pothos (Epipremnum pinnatum 'Aureum').

Medium, majestic deciduous tree 5-7m. Tallows have a broad, rounded habit with small heart shaped leaves. The leaves are dark green, turning bright red in Autumn. Very attractive tree suitable for courtyards or most sized gardens.

Medium Shade:
For the most part, deciduous trees provide medium shade. However, large trees may provide dense shade not suitable for many plants. Trimming of tree branches may be necessary to allow ample sunlight to lighten the shade.

'Anaheim'
'Anaheim' is the best known of the New Mexico chile peppers, the fruits of which grow 6 to 8 inches long and can be used either green or red—the redder, the hotter.

Medium Shade is found under decks and in northern-facing areas with a structure or tree blocking the available sunlight. This situation is where the dividing line really starts between full-sun and full-shade plants.

Epimedium
Blanket your garden with a subtle splash of color. Epimedium's low-growing habit and delicate flowers work wonders in shady, otherwise-bare areas under trees and shrubs.

ACID MEDIUM -- A compost which contains little or no lime and has a pH of less than 6.5. Sometimes referred to as "sour" soil by gardeners.
AERATION -- The loosening of soil by digging or other mechanical means to allow air to pass freely.

Add Medium Tall Plants On An Angle
Now we have our tallest plants in, we are going to add our second tallest plants, the stock. The trick when planting the side plants is to plant them on an angle. We do this for two reasons.

Growing medium should be lightweight, not topsoil. Usually fabricated from variances of primarily expanded shale, perlite, coconut husk, and/or peat moss.

Choose plants that are drought tolerant, as rooftop irrigation can be avoided.

Potting medium (pl. media)-Material used for growing plants in containers. It may include vermiculite, perlite, coir, sand, peat, compost, bark, and/or soil.

There are a variety of potting mixtures. Those designed for terracotta pots are full of organic matter to retain a lot of moisture.

In a medium saucepan, combine quartered plums, wine, vanilla bean and seeds and brown sugar and bring to a boil over medium heat. Cook until thickened, about 25 minutes; remove and discard vanilla bean.

Ligustrum-Medium - (ligustrum lucidum)
Native to China and Eastern Asia and now grown ornamentally in the United States.

The growing medium should be thoroughly moistened before it is placed in your seedstarting containers (warm water works best). Fill the flats or containers to within 1/4 to 1/2 inch of the top. You are now ready to sow your seeds.

Make sure the medium is moist prior to inserting cuttings. If incompletely moist, then the cut surface may contact a dry pocket and have its own water absorbed away by the medium component.

yew - A medium sized evergreen shrub, maturing at roughly 5' tall by 10' wide with a slow growth rate. Yews like full sun to full shade and well-drained soils.

The adults are medium sized moths with a rather heavy body and a wing spread of from 30 to 40 mm. The forewings of the female are medium to dark brown (Fig. 1), whereas those of the male are usually light to medium brown.

Aggregate - medium usually grow rocks, gavel, or lava rocks that is all nearly the same size, and used for an inert hydroponic medium.

A good hydroponic medium should support the plants in the system, not break down, absorb and retain moisture, be porous to allow air circulation and proper drainage, and protect plant roots from temperature extremes.

3 Cloves Garlic

2 Tbs. Red Hot Pepper
2 Cups water
Chop up ingredients, blend one minute on high. Let stand 24 hrs. Put mixture through a sieve (nylon stocking).
Mix with 1 gallon water, then spray.
