Meiosis- Reduction division resulting in the production of haploid gametes; a process consisting of two specialized nuclear divisions ultimately leading to the formation of eggs or sperm.

meiosis A cell division process where the chromosome number is reduced by half.

Each young ovule within an ovary contains a megasporocyte that undergoes meiosis to produce four haploid megaspores. Three of these usually disintegrate, and one divides mitotically and develops into a female gametophyte, also called and embryo sac.

sporangium -- A chamber inside of which spores are produced through meiosis.
sporophyll -- Any leaf which bears sporangia is called a sporophyll.
