A soil pH meter can quickly and accurately provide the soil pH of your yard or garden. Designed like an "instant read" thermometer, a soil pH meter is typically a battery-operated, hand held device.

The design seems simple enough; attach a disk, or Sunshine Meter, to one of the plastic flowers and insert the flower in the ground where you want to measure the sun exposure.

Diameter of the spear has no bearing on quality. Spears should be harvested when they are 5 to 7″ high and before the tips begin to loosen. Once the tips loosen, the spears become tough and fibrous.

A compost thermometer to monitor your pile’s temperature. A metal pole will also indicate heat. Insert the pole into the center of the pile as you would a compost thermometer.

Watch your thermometer on colder nights. A windless, cold, clear night usually means a killing frost.... You can keep your Chrysanthemums and Asters blooming for quite a while longer if you take the time to provide a little frost protection for them.

Clear the site of all building materials (wood, cement, bricks, etc.), as well as any buried stumps, rocks , stones or other debris that is larger than 4-5 cm (2-3 inches) in diameter.

In preparing baths, a thermometer is the best temperature test, however, the "elbow test" will sometimes help when a thermometer is not available. A cold bath is an excellent means of stimulating the system.

On closely mowed turfgrass, such as bentgrass golf greens, the characteristic symptoms of dollar spot are small, circular, straw-colored, sunken spots that rarely exceed 2-3 inches in diameter.

Plant the bulb in a pot 1-2 inches larger than the diameter of the bulb. Use a well drained soil mix and place 1/3 to 1/2 of the bulb above the soil line-if planted too deep you will get leaves and no flowers.

Get a moisture meter and use it before watering. Put the meter lead down in the dirt to about where you think the majority of the roots are growing. Wipe it off after each test and ensure it is dry before doing another plant.

A low-cost hose is usually 1/2 inch in diameter and delivers about 9 gallons of water per minute (gpm). Higher quality hoses are typically 5/8 inches in diameter and can deliver as much as 17 gpm.

MATERIALS FOR A GARDEN ROUGHLY THREE BY THREE METERS
- Two cubic metres of a sandy topsoil. It's easy to form into a mound, and retains a suitable amount of moisture for alpine plants.

Take your knife and cut holes along the edges of the bin's lid, about 1 centimeter wide. I placed these about 3 centimeters apart. Next, cut a few holes in the middle of the lid. These holes will allow air and moisture to circulate.

BUILD YOUR PILE about four feet in diameter, and four feet high, on a well-drained site.

Prepare the soil for planting rhubarb by deep trenching a hole 1 meter wide and by the same depth if possible. Fork over the subsoil and add 1kg of bone dust or meal. Mix equal parts of stable, cow or poultry manure and replace to form a mound.

The diameter of the pot should be about ONE inch larger than that of the bulb. Although this may seem small, amarylis bulbs prefer a smaller container. Select a potting medium that has a high organic matter, but drains well.

In a warm summer with plenty of rain, these dramatic plants can reach 10-12 ft (3-3.7 m) in height, with leaves up to 2 ft (0.6 m) in diameter that may be bright green or bronze red, depending on the variety.

Even if you have covered the soil in the kitchen garden with cloches or plastic sheeting, you cannot be sure the soil is warm enough for sowing unless you test it with a soil thermometer.

This native to central and southern Japan can reach 20-25 meters (65-80 ft) in height. Its straight trunk generates lateral shoots spreading outward. The leaves are similar to that of pine but much longer and flatter with a clear midrib.

Insert the blade of a screwdriver or other tool, or a 1/4-inch-diameter rod or bolt into the center hole to check the balance. If the blade rotates to one side, file or grind off material from that end of the blade.

Once you've gotten a sense of the structure and makeup of the local bird habitat, make a drawing of your property and its perimeter, and sketch in all of your existing plants, especially trees and shrubs.

The next step is to notice whether half-circle heads along the perimeter come on separately from full-circle heads in open areas. If so, doubling the run time for zones in open areas should solve your problem.

When planting magnolias dig in as much compost as possible and work the soil in an area twice the diameter of the root ball of the plant.
