Moss can lay low in your lawn, but before you know it can be practically everywhere. Knowing what causes moss is the first step to reclaiming your lawn. With the culprits unmasked, you'll be ready to take action. Ready to fight? Read on.
Moss Making Recipe:
2 cups buttermilk or plain yogurt
1 - 1 1/2 cups of chopped-up moss (Fresh or Dried)
Mix until creamy and spreadable. If the mixture is too thick, add a small amount of water. If it's too thin, add more moss.
Moss will come off and go out with the flow of water.

Peat Moss
This is the brown spongy stuff sold in bags at the garden center. It might cost a little of your allowance to buy, but it does a good job of helping both clay and sandy soils. One little tip.
Growing Moss Roses
Moss roses can be grown from seed in the spring. For earliest blooms, start the seeds indoors several weeks before the last frost date for your area. Seeds take about two weeks to germinate.
Moss Rose is a hardy annual well suited to hot, dry areas where other flowers wilt or refuse to grow. Easy to grow, Moss Rose plants requires little care and attention. A small plant, they grow just 4 to 8 inches.
Moss Rose grows just four to six inches tall. Place it in the front of your flower garden. Try planting Moss Rose as border edging, in rock gardens, as bedding plants or ground cover. They also look good in containers and hanging pots.

Charming flowers are carried on spreading, low stems of fleshy foliage. Use in containers, rock gardens or mixed plantings.
Moss Rose is a common name for Portulaca grandiflora, a plant that thrives in hot dry climates. Related to purslane, one of my favorite soup and salad herbs, moss roses are also well-suited to hydroponic growing. Here is my moss rose grow log.
The Moss
Second, you need moss. Sphagnum moss is actually the living top layer of a sphagnum bog.
Peat Moss - Readily available baled or bagged sphagnum peat moss is recommended. Materials such as Michigan peat, peat humus, and native peat are usually too decomposed to provide necessary structural and water-drainage characteristics.

Moss indicates a shady, acid and infertile soil.
Nutsedge indicates that the soil is too wet and poorly drained.
The moss should turn black after a few days and can be raked out after a couple of weeks to encourage new grass growth.
Grass clippings can be added to the compost heap.
Don't apply to lawns less than 6 months old.

Peat moss is expensive, and when used as mulch the surface dries out quickly making it easily wind blown. Once dry, peat moss is very difficult to rewet and tends to shed water.

Plants that generally will live for multiple seasons, in the plants preferred climate.
Sphagnum moss is available in the form of long or short fibers, alive or dried. Live sphagnum moss is the best for orchids. If not over watered or over fertilized, it will continue to grow after being placed in the orchid pot.
SPHAGNUM MOSS -- Various mosses native to bogs are sphagnum. Often used for the lining of hanging baskets and for air layering. (See Air Layering)
SPORE -- A reproductive cell of nonflowering plants, such as ferns.
Place the moss and a little buttermilk into a blender and mix them together. The mix should be runny enough to paint on a container with a brush.

Paint the moss-buttermilk slurry on the outside of your container.
Fuzzy: Moss, lamb's ears and pussy willow are soft to the touch and provide visual texture.
Feathery: The silky tufts of feather grass and hare tale's grass help these plants live up to their name.
5. Keep the moss moist by lightly watering it every other day. Keeping a little bit of water in the plate will also help keep your it moist. For best results, follow the plant's directions on ideal lighting and fertilizing needs.

Spread mulch (wood chips, bark, compost, leaves, etc.) around trees, shrubs, and perennials to control weeds.
Irish Moss - Sagina subulata - Release this groundcover on your property with caution, since it is very invasive. I like to use Irish Moss on hilly, rocky spots where it cannot escape easily.
Compost, humus, or peat moss are also ideal supplements to the soil when planting spring flower bulbs if the flower garden is not yet established. Fertilizer will not be necessary for the first blooms but can be added for plants that are perennials.
Commercial growers use peat moss. This material should be dampened and then squeezed dry to remove any chemicals. Adding a little lime to the peat moss will help neutralize it. Regular soil can be used also.
