What is Mulch?
Mulch is any type of material that is spread or laid over the surface of the soil as a covering. It is used to retain moisture in the soil, suppress weeds, keep the soil cool and make the garden bed look more attractive.

Mulches can also save long term work because weed seedlings are deprived of light and will therefore die. The mulch also creates a barrier which stops weed seeds from reaching the soil in the first place.

Mulch Management
Apply loose and sheet mulches at planting time. To prepare an area to be mulched, remove perennial weeds and level the area. Soil should be moist but not wet.

Mulching vegetable gardens: One rule for the vegetable garden is never mulch onions as the bulbs need to swell and ripen in the sun.

Mulch is used to keep the soil moist and reduce the amount of water that evaporates from the soil. Mulching flower beds prevents soil from compacting. If soil is compacted, then water cannot percolate into the soil for plants to use.

Mulch in the vegetable garden helps retain soil moisture by cutting down on surface evaporation. It also protects soil structure by decreasing compaction from pounding rains or overhead irrigation.

Use mulch to save time and money in the garden.
