In Search of "Mutants"
Terra Nova Nurseries in Oregon is another company that offers a plant discovery program to everyday gardeners. Owner Dan Heims started the nursery with a discovery of his own.

(L. varietas, variety) a taxonomic group below the species used in different senses by different specialists, including a race, stock, strain, breed, subspecies, geographical race, or mutant.

Consequently, this variety contains a mutant gene for elevated sugars that gives it two to three times the sugar content of ordinary sweet corn. "Outstanding gourmet flavor," commented one of the judges.

Purple Cauliflower was a discovery of a spontaneous mutant plant in a cauliflower field in the late 1980s, combined with breeding work in Denmark. The color properties are very stable and the plant grows well in warm areas.
