Natural light in an apartment can sometimes be hard to come by. Depending upon the level of the apartment and the layout of the apartment, windows may not be facing directions where a lot of natural light is able to come in.

A large part of the success in growing hydroponically is planning where to place the plants. Grow plants that have similar growing requirements in the same system.

When natural light is insufficient for the type of plants you want to grow, consider supplemental indoor garden lighting. There are three main types: fluorescent, grow lights and High Intensity Discharge (HID) light systems.

Not much natural light in your home? No problem. These plants can handle it.

For spaces lit by natural light, virtually no preparation is really required. However, for the more serious indoor gardener, or in spaces where light is lacking, prepping the space for an indoor garden does take a little effort.

Spider plants enjoy natural light, but not direct sunlight. You should place your plants near a window but not directly in them, this will cause browning of the leaves. The plants do well in cool rooms as long as there is enough light.

If your home has lots of natural light, you should be able to place your plants almost anywhere. Some plants do best in bright light, while others prefer mid-level or low light.

Once you have chosen a plant for bonsai, look at its natural light requirements. For instance, a juniper can grow in full sun, as can a redbud or a birch tree.

Most bulbs prefer an open sunny position or light shade, and in fact many will flower poorly if they don't receive enough natural light, although in warmer climates many will tolerate a little more shade. Most bulbs like very good drainage.

In our first article we suggested that you consider the natural light in your home. Northern light, though constant throughout the day, is a low light and good for green foliage plants. Colored foliage requires a brighter light or may lose some color.

Uplighting creates a dramatic reversal of natural light, creating striking effects. A canister fixture staked in the ground can send a swath of light upward to highlight a tree's shape, color, and canopy.

Suspend fluorescent lights three inches above the tray to provide light -even if you have some natural light. As the seedlings grow, raise the light fixture to maintain the three-inch separation.

It’s much better to grow seedlings under fluorescent lights than to rely solely on natural light, even in a greenhouse.

Unless you have a very sunny south window, you will need to supplement natural light with fluorescent light.

The Victorians created garden rooms in their homes but were limited in their plant choices by the amount of available natural light.

To give a small garden a sense of space, add mirrored panels to reflect natural light and make the area feel larger.

Augment natural light with fluorescent bulbs or grow lights. A combination of two fluorescent bulbs and two incandescent bulbs is usually sufficient, but keep incandescent bulbs several inches from seedlings because they generate heat.

A greenhouse should let in as much natural light as possible to benefit the plants inside. However, the glass or glazing panels must be supported by a strong structure, which can vary in thickness, depending on the material.
