Pruning includes removal of other than terminal shoot tips. Sometimes an entire branch or section of a plant should be removed for the sake of appearance.

 


Plant new growth while skies are overcast or in the late afternoon. Water immediately after transplanting.
Provide protection for flower seedlings, such as an empty milk carton, especially in windy areas or if seedlings wilt.

Keep leaves off the newly emerged blades of grass by blowing or raking. Leaves, especially large ones, can smother the young, tender blades.

All new growth comes from buds. Plants grow up and out from the tips of their shoots.

When new growth is evident, the new plant is ready to be removed from the parent plant. Use sharp, clean pruning shears to separate the plants.

When new growth is forming, fertilize these plants monthly with a water-soluble commercial orchid formulation, or use a 20-20-20 formulation.

To encourage new growth, pinch off the spent blooms as they wilt. Light pruning in the early spring to open up the plant and remove dead growth will allow better air circulation and help prevent fungal diseases.

Because most new growth is tender, your thumb and forefinger generally make good 'pinchers.' If the growth isn't tender enough to just pinch off, use pruners or a sharp knife. Avoid leaving any jagged edges, which also can harbor disease.

You should see new growth within a week or two. Once new shoots have two sets of leaves, pinch out growing tips to encourage branching, and continue doing this on subsequent branches.

Most perennials should be divided in early spring when new growth is only a few inches high. If you miss your chance in the spring, wait until fall.

When a tree is pruned, it releases hormones, or auxins, that encourage new growth at lateral buds along the branches.

Unless it is an emergency, the best time to repot an orchid with pseudobulbs, such as the cattelya shown here, is just after it has begun to produce a new growth but before the new roots have begun to elongate.
