Northern Grasses In roughly the northern half of the United States, cool-climate grasses are used for lawns.
Cool-season or northern grasses include Kentucky bluegrass (Poa pratensis), fescue (Festuca) and rye.
Excessive spring growth also produces thin-walled grass blade cells that are more prone to injury and disease. Fall is the preferred time for feeding northern grasses and midspring for southern ones.
