NPK Nitrogen, Phosphorous and Potash; the three main food elements necessary for plant life. Nitrogen is required for foliage and growth, phosphorous for flowers and potash for roots.

Three native goldenrods -- Solidago canadensis, S. graminifolia and S. rugosa -- intermingle with sparkles of lavender New England aster (Aster novae-angliae). It is a breathtaking combination that I look forward to seeing every year.

These multi-petal flowers grow in full sun to partial shade. In the Northeastern part of the country, the most frequently grown asters for fall blooming are the New York (Aster novi-belgii) and the New England (Aster novae-angliae).
