When looking to specifically add nitrogen to your garden, choose a fertilizer that has a high first number in the NPK ratio. The NPK ration will look something like 10-10-10 and the first number tells you the amount of nitrogen.
The NPK ratio for greensand is approximately 0-0-3. It is a good organic source of potash (important for overall plant health and disease resistance) and can also be applied at a rate of 50 to 100 pounds per 1000 square feet to improve clay soils.
Lawn fertilizer tends to contain more nitrogen than general purpose fertilizer (a standard NPK ratio for lawn fertilizer is 3:1:2 or 4:1:2). The primary decision regarding nitrogen in lawn fertilizer is slow release or fast release.
Use an organic fertilizer with a balanced NPK ratio. Too much fertilizer encourages vigorous vegetative growth at the expense of blooming. Established wisteria needs little fertilizer or additional water.
" But avoid products high in nitrogen because that's not the nutrient turf grasses need most during that time of year. Instead, use a balanced fertilizer, meaning one with an NPK ratio of 3-1-2 such as 6-2-4 or 12-4-8.
