These larvae bore into small nutlets and destroy them. They are capable of destroying the entire nut crop if not controlled. To control this pest, look for the eggs on the tip of young nutlets, about the time of pollination.

 


Landscape designer Harry Hutchins is especially fond of witch hazel (Hamamelis virginiana) for its twiggy growth and nutlets that hang on all winter.

Fruits are small, woody nutlets, hanging on long stems beneath large, leafy bracts from August - October.

Nutgrass 'Nihilator will kill it right down to the nutlets. However, there are two types of nutgrass, yellow and purple. Unfortunately, Nutgrass 'Nihilator only controls the yellow species.
