Everyone recognizes lady beetles and welcomes them into their gardens. Unfortunately baby lady beetles look nothing like they do as adults.

nymph The immature stage of an insect that undergoes simple metamorphosis. Usually similar in form to the adult.

Mature nymphs dig tunnels to the surface and emerge when the soil temperature reaches 64-68 degrees. That's why southern areas see them emerge first. When the brood emerges, they do so in the millions, perhaps trillions.

Nymphs are the more destructive stage. As they feed they inject a toxin into the plant tissue that stunts or otherwise deforms growth. These sleek insects move very quickly, and adults fly when disturbed.

Nymphaeaceae
18-36"
Like any other perennial plant, each different water lily will have specific needs when it comes to their sunlight, soil, fertilization, water depth and pruning requirements.

: Nymphs hatch and begin to damage new growth.
: Adults return to trees to chew holes in leaves.
: Larvae cause peak injury to un-protected tree bases this month.

The nymphs look like flat plastic discs attached to stems or the backs of leaves. They are yellow at first but become green and well camouflaged as they mature. The nymphs don't move once they settle down to suck plant juices.

The nymphs are usually a white to greenish-gray color and have no wings, though they do have legs. On average it takes about 4-6 weeks for them to mature into adult squash bugs.

SCB nymphs and adults feed on the aboveground stolons of St. Augustine grass. Like other chinch bugs, they suck fluids from the plants, causing the lawn to dry out.

Adults and nymphs pierce stalks, leaves, veins, or fruit, with their needle-like mouthparts and suck out plant juices. Plant may exhibit cloudy spots at puncture wounds. Young plants may wilt, turn brown, and die. Older plants will show stunting.

Pygmy water lily-type plants such as the variegated Fringe Lily (Nymphoides geminata), which has a beautiful yellow flower, will only grow well where there's no water splashing onto their foliage.

Ticks pass through three feeding stages: the larva, nymph, and adult. Typically, each stage feeds on a different host. Hosts include a variety of animals (e.g., mice, rabbits, deer), depending on the life stage.

The immature stage is a translucent nymph. There may be several generations per season.

From the nymphs of ancient Greece to the brownies of Britain and the leprechauns of Ireland, fairies have been around for a long time. Fairies can be kind to humans or they can be mean and mischievous. They live among the flowers, woods and streams.

Psylla adults simply won't lay eggs on trees sprayed with kaolin, and the kaolin residue irritates psylla nymphs. Your trees will look like they're dusty, but the stuff is harmless. It is so effective, says John Dunley, Ph.D.
