Occidentalis/occidentale Globally western in origin.
Odd pinnate A compound pinnate leaf with a terminal or odd numbered leaflet at the tip.

T. occidentalis `Rheingold' -- This turns orange-yellow in the summer and a deeper orange: in winter. Shearing can keep it in good shape, and it can grow 3 feet.

T. occidentalis 'DeGroot's Spire' is another favorite upright selection, growing to just eight feet tall x two feet wide at maturity. The foliage grows as twisted and spiraling fans, a unique feature.

Thuja occidentalis 'Hertz Midget' (1' H x 1' W) 'Hertz Midget' is one of the smallest evergreens you will find. It grows as a tight, round ball, with the feathery Arborvitae needles. A good choice for a small garden and it easily tolerates some shade.

Rudbeckia occidentalis is a particularly beautiful species growing to 2 metres with tall stems topped by large, showy, yellow blooms with the distinctive cone centre and reflex petals.

Common Hackberry (Celtis occidentalis) is a medium-sized native (to Eastern U.S.) tree that is well adapted to Colorado soils. It grows to 50 feet with a rounded crown just as wide. The Hackberry tolerates har, wind, alkaline soil and urban pollution.
