Overwintering the Garden
Rather than overwinter plants, you may wish to treat them as annuals. Otherwise, you'll need to bring plants inside. Water lilies may be overwintered if cleaned and stored in moist sand in a cool, dark basement.

In the past, I overwintered my passiflora plants by bringing their containers inside just before the first frost.

NOTE on overwintering cuttings: Getting cuttings through the first winter without a greenhouse is the hardest part of starting new hydrangeas from cuttings.

Overwintering Pansies
Plant as early as possible. The more established the plants are, the better they'll be able to withstand cold, desiccating winter conditions. That means planting in September, if possible.

Overwintering adults attack the swelling buds by boring into them and hollowing out the inside (Fig. 1 and Fig. 5). In contrast, the larvae and summer adults feed on the tender leaf tissues but avoid the leaf veins (Fig. 3 and Fig. 6 and Fig. 7).

Overwintering birds greatly appreciate a year-round supply of fresh water. But if you live in an area with extended freezing temperatures, you may find that your birdbath or water feature freezes over rather quickly.

OVERWINTERING MUMS
Winter hardiness varies considerably among chrysanthemum varieties. The hardiest can withstand extremely cold winters.

Overwintering: some less hardy oreganos are grown as annuals in zones 5 and north, and some are evergreen in the south.

Start overwintering broccolis early in summer and transplant them in August, so plants have time to grow by January. Plants that are either too small or too large at the onset of low temperatures will suffer. Also, don't overfertilize.

Tips for overwintering tropicals
Grow your tropicals in containers and when the weather dips below 50 degrees at night, just bring the container in to your garage, basement or sunroom.

To improve overwintering, wait until spring to cut back foliage. May need winter protection and good drainage to survive Zone 5 winters.

Ted's other challenge is overwintering his tender plants. Cincinnati sits in Zone 6, giving it the potential for harsh winters. Ted moves some plants to a small, heated greenhouse each November. By early April, he begins moving them out again.

Scale is a problem on most fruit trees as well as overwintering eggs from mites, aphids and other insects.

Place the tubers in a single layer in a wooden crate, plastic tub, or 5-gallon bucket, making sure none touches another. Cover them with lightly moistened peat moss or sand. If you are overwintering tubers of more than one variety, label each.

Usually including, or composed only o, a dormant oil, a dormant spary is a very effective way to kill overwintering insects and disease organisms and reduce the necessity for multiple sprays during the growing season.

Once the panes of glass are dry, insulate the greenhouse with bubblewrap to protect any plants you are overwintering, and to encourage the greenhouse to heat up more rapidly in the spring.
Check the panels for any broken or cracked glass.

A simple greenhouse can be made by using a chain-link fence top rail, bend it and cover with plastic. This could be used for starting early vegetable transplants, overwintering houseplants, or simple uses.

This keeps insects and disease from overwintering.
Collect some seed heads and dried flowers for winter arrangements.
Some perennials survive winter better if the dead foliage is allowed to remain until spring.
