Palmately lobed describes a leaf that is divided into 3 or more distinct lobes, like the palm of your hand with outstretched fingers. For example, Maples.

Palmate - the leaflets are attached directly to the end of the petiole and extend outward much like fingers in a palm. Examples are Schefflera actinophylla (Australian umbrella tree) and Parthenocissus quinquefolia (Virginia creeper).

Palmate Globemallow Sphaeralcea digatata (Mallow-Malvaceae) is a common perennial with bright orange blossoms and five petaled grey green leaves. Fruits are edible, as well as pollen and seeds.

Large palm leaves or 'fronds' are usually either deeply divided fan-shaped (palmate) or feathery (pinnate) with many smaller leaflets on a long, single petiole stem. These leaves are produced one at a time from a single 'bud' atop the trunk.

Take a close look at a random selection of leaves to see what variety there is in their size and shape alone, from the fine filigree leaves of artemisias and the slender ornamental grasses to the palmate, glossy, plate-sized leaves of Fatsia japonica.

The palmate leaves alternate along the stem and are divided into five equal-sized leaflets. Leaflets emerge with a purplish color and become green as they mature. The unusual flowers are about 1 inch across and appear in late March to early April.
