Parasite
An organism that grows and feeds on another. Completely parasitic plants have no leaves or chlorophyll, relying entirely upon the host for nourishment. Semi-parasitic plants have leaves and are able to produce some of their own food.

Parasite - organism that lives on or in another host organism: Fungus is a parasite.
Peat - partially decomposed vegetation (usually moss) with slow decay due to extreme moisture and cold.

PARASITE - Any plant that grows upon another. It steals its moisture and nourishment from its host. Mistletoe is a good example.

Egg parasites are very effective biological control agents in unsprayed trees, but are apparently eliminated by the sprays applied in commercial orchards.

Invisible parasites such as external protozoa and flukes can not be seen but they usually cause symptoms including extra thick mucus, constant scratching by rubbing against objects, flashing, or jumping.

Mistletoe is a semi-parasite, depending on the host plant for all its water and mineral needs, yet it's capable of producing part of its food needs through photosynthesis. Mistletoe is most common on oaks, elms and hickories.

Growing up to 3 inches in length, the shells of whipworms are extremely tough and the parasites can live in soil for years.

Several egg parasites and an adult parasite are known but these do not seem to build up populations rapidly enough to control this pest. Currently no work is being undertaken to augment these parasites.

This disease is caused by an Armillaria fungus, a native parasite often found in tree roots on newly cleared land. It can live many years in old tree roots and stumps. The fungus breaks down root tissue and eventually girdles plants.

The heat that builds up underneath it will kill most garden pests and their eggs, weeds, parasites and a host of other harmful microorganisms. After removing the plastic, lightly cultivate the soil. Now you're ready for planting.

Never add human, dog or cat manure to the garden as it can be a source of parasites and diseases. Organic fertilizers can pollute water just as easily as conventional fertilizers, so keep them off paved surfaces and avoiding applying too much.

As a vermifuge, it has been found effective against ringworm, tapeworm and other parasites. Historically, it has been used to fight poison, venomous bites, bites by rabid dogs, gangrene, and boils.

Their appearance, however, may justly be attributed to the diseased state of the plant; for wherever putrefaction takes place, either in animal or vegetable substances, the presence of these parasites will never be wanting.
