A small patio garden can become an oasis for birds. Small bird feeders will attract your feathered friends. They will stay near your patio garden if you incorporate a birdbath as a source of water and provide them with nesting hideaways.

To check drainage, empty a bucket of water into the planting hole and take a coffee break; if the water is still there when you return, do not plant.
Use old or recycled bricks for a raised bed; they will give a more mellow look.

A patio tree serves a special function. It must suggest a feeling of privacy that encourages conversation, whether dining with company or enjoying your loved ones.

If your patio area lends itself to a free-form shape, you can avoid the need to cut straight edges on your flagstone. If your area has rigid boundaries, taking a good sketch to the supplier is vital.

If your patio surface is a bit dull or out-of-date, you can liven it up without tearing it out. Concrete paints, modular decking, a layer of pea gravel and even a few ground covers squeezed into unsightly cracks can improve its appearance.

If your patio has an awning above, or if you have a tree nearby with strong branches, hanging baskets of perennials, placing them almost as if they were lanterns, is another way to add beauty to your patio and garden.

To Shade a Patio or Deck

Whether you have a small garden, an acre or simply some pots on the patio, you can grow fresh vegetables. Vegetables need at least six hours of sunlight a day to produce well. Fertilize at planting, mulch and water and you are off and running.

For optimim success grow special varieties of tomatoes that are designed for container gardening such as a Patio Hybrid, Totem Hybrid (70 days). Both have compact vines that produce medium sized tomatoes. Tomatoes need at least 6-8 hrs of sun.

Start the project by cutting 6 3' lengths of patio timber. On the cut end of each timber, measure in 1¾", roughly on center and mark the spot with a pencil. Next measure across the timber and make another mark at 1¾".

To get started with solar lighting, try a set of solar lights for your deck or patio. Once you try solar lighting for your lawn and garden, you probably may want to try more options.

Paving brick is great landscaping material used for walkways, patios, around entrance ways, and pools. Paving bricks vary in size and color, ranging from deep reds to browns, to speckled black.

Secondly - The reflected heat from a wall or patio can intensify the odors from many plants, giving us more bang for our buck.

For better display, construct a unit along the lines of a patio table that has built-in benches.

Remove isolated weeds in paths, drives and patios with an old knife or by spraying with a spot weeder. For more persistent widespread weeds, use a path weedkiller to eliminate existing weeds and prevent new ones from growing.
