PEA GRAVEL - Gravel about the size of a pea. Used a lot in driveways and walkways.

Pea gravel is another option and is also good for under the potting benches, to prevent things from getting muddy and damp.

Small pea gravel accumulates and holds onto dirt, and is harder to clean than rock of a 1 half" + nature. Not only does it hold onto dirt but has a tendency to be blown all around when being cleaned with a blower.

The bottom layer is for drainage, and consists of pea gravel, pebbles, or very coarse sand.
Proper drainage is essential to ensure that the soil doesn't become over-saturated, which may lead to root rot, and the death of your plants.

Heavy clay garden soil is used for potting, topped with a 1/2- to-3/4 inch layer of pea gravel to keep the soil in place. Don't use a commercial potting soil mix or any type of soil containing fertilizer. This will alter the container ecosystem.

Place a shallow layer of the pea gravel and charcoal mixture at the bottom of the pot surrounding the tube. Fill the tube with the pea gravel mixture as well.

To ensure good drainage, I put an inch of pea gravel in the bottom of the trough and then filled it with a soilless potting mix. There are drainage holes in the bottom so water won't collect.

Walker backfills the empty spaces in the wall with pea gravel, which will make the wall more sturdy. If the stones do shift a bit, the pea gravel keeps everything in place.

When potting a bonsai plant, place a layer of pea gravel, 1 inch deep, in a decorative container, then add potting soil, mounding it in the center.

For plants growing in pots in a pond or half-barrel, add a pea gravel mulch to keep soil in place under water.
Feed with an aquatic plant fertilizer in the spring before flowering and again after blooms fade.

If you don't have room for a large tub garden, a small dish garden stocked with marginal aquatics may be perfect for you. Just about any container can be used.

Shredded or chipped bark looks softer than stone, and doesn't heat up as much, but pea gravel works well, too.

Add a top dressing of pea gravel to newly planted containers and, if possible, to exposed areas of soil within the pool.

Cover the soil in each container with a 1-inch layer of pea gravel. or sand, but don't cover the plant's growing tips. Place newly planted water lilies in shallow water 8 inches deep until they show new growth, then move them to water 18 inches deep.

Inorganic mulches are stone-based and include rock, cobblestone, pea gravel, lava rock and crushed rock. They last longer than organic mulches and give landscapes a more formal look.

Mulch is a great weed suppressor and is readily available from most garden centers in the form of wood chips, shredded bark, pea gravel or chopped leaves.

If you're worried about drainage, you can dig a bit deeper and line your trench with pea gravel or coarse stone, drill a series of weep holes in the frame, or even install drainage pipes under and/or around the beds.

Fill the container with potting soil about 1/4 of the way up the potato. The use the pea gravel to fill the container up to the half way mark on the potato. Add water to your bonsai potato container and place it in a sunny window.

Cover soil with 1/2 inch pea gravel and slowly lower container into water. When you see new growth, lower to 12-18 inches below water surface. You can use bricks (not concrete) under your pots to alter the depth of the plant.

ROCK MULCH
Rocks can be used as mulch in the landscape. Use river rock or pea gravel to maintain a proper size and color in the landscape.

Afterward, apply a 1 in (2.5 cm) thick mulch of pea gravel or fine pebbles. This type of mulch allows water to filter through freely to plant roots, but it does a good job of holding soil and roots in place.

If your patio surface is a bit dull or out-of-date, you can liven it up without tearing it out. Concrete paints, modular decking, a layer of pea gravel and even a few ground covers squeezed into unsightly cracks can improve its appearance.

You wanted a nice vegetable garden, layout be danged. Don't spend your whole first spring laying pea gravel when you should be digging the garden bed and setting out the transplants.

When potting the water lilies and lotuses Geoff recommends adding compost to the bottom of the pot, then a heavy topsoil. Put the plant in it, and add some pea gravel on top because it stops the dirt getting into the water.

Use a heavy-duty PVC liner for the creek bed that drops away from the falls, then cover the bed with pea gravel. Line the creek edges with rocks, and create shallow pools to serve as bird bathing areas.

Best avoided by keeping the air humid by damping down greenhouses or spraying plants with water. Destroy affected leaves and shoots. Houseplants can be placed on damp pea gravel or similar to keep a reservoir of moisture around the base.
