Two major pests of plum trees are the peach tree borer and the pear slug. Peach tree borers attack the lower part of the trunk. They can be controlled with pesticides applied to the lower trunk during the first part of July.
A host of other insects visit backyard orchards -- various caterpillars, pear slugs, and leafhoppers to name a few. However, their needs are usually modest and don't seriously threaten your harvest.
