Absorbent or permeable containers, such as terra cotta or peat pots, are much more susceptible to drying out than plastic containers.

Use permeable row covers to protect seedlings and transplants from frost. When the edges are buried completely to form a tight barrier, row covers also protect carrots, radishes, and mustard plants from the fly that gives birth to root maggots.

Roots tend to grow along impermeable surfaces until they find a crack or other "path of least resistance" where they can penetrate.

They provide fertilization over a period of time (usually 2-6 months) after application by slowly releasing its nutrients through a permeable coating around the fertilizer.

Controlled-release fertilizers are coated with a permeable substance that controls the dispersal of the fertilizer. Water enters the granules and releases fertilizer as it leaves.

What to use for mulch: An effective winter mulch must be water- and air-permeable so as not to smother the plant below.

Line the inside bottom of the bed with permeable landscape fabric, lapping and stapling it into the joints between the top two courses of timbers.

The less permeable a cloche is, the warmer the trapped air remains on cold nights. On the other hand, airtight cloches demand more attention to prevent overheating and possible death to your plants.

You can have the smaller cacti in water-permeable clay pots and water-tight, plastic containers as both will be suitable. If you put the cacti on a window sill the plastic containers would be best as the soil won't dry out quickly.

Consider this: If you've ever visited the southern United States, you've probably seen roadside forests draped in an impermeable green blanket of kudzu, Pueraria lobata.

Line raised beds with permeable landscape fabric or a 1-inch layer of newspapers to give new plants a weed-free start. Both linings will bio-degrade after several seasons, allowing plantings to establish and crowd them out in the future.

For example, if soils that are highly permeable drain extremely fast, whereas soils with low permeability tend to retain water.

Hoe or mulch the space, either with an organic mulch or a woven, semi-permeable paper or fabric mulching mat to keep it weed free. Planting bulbs, or a few bedding plants in the open space, will not deprive the main plants of moisture or food.

Do not add fill (soil or other materials) on top of the natural soil level, as this will make the soil less permeable, restricting the movement of water and increasing the risk of root and crown rot.

: the flow or diffusion that takes place through a semipermeable membrane typically separating a solvent and a solution that strives to bring about a condition of equilibrium.

This eco-friendly home makes use of green landscaping techniques, including native plants, a permeable flagstone patio to allow it to absorb the runoff from the roof, and a water saving irrigation system. Watch the video to learn more.

Black mulching paper is permeable and, like black plastic, used for short-term vegetable crops.

Scarification (for seed)- Pregerminative treatment to make seed coats permeable to water and gases; accomplished usually by mechanical abrasion or by soaking seeds briefly in a strong acid or other chemical solution.

If a garden is tilled to the same depth each year, a hardpan layer may develop just below the usual tilling depth. Hardpan forms an impermeable "floor" where water accumulates and cannot soak through.

Tie the four sticks together with string and line the basket with a permeable lining. The outer edges will consist of a wall of flat stones that will gradually be built up to 4 feet high (again, this is up to you).

Air and moisture don't penetrate plastic, so plant roots don't develop, but weeds come through the plastic. Instead, use an air- and water- permeable landscape fabric under the mulch if an additional weed barrier is needed.

Use drip irrigation or a soaker hose to water plants under row covers. You also can use a sprinkler because the row cover material is water permeable.

If your garden is in a windy area, you can reduce the hardship to your plants by putting up a windbreak. A 50 percent permeable windbreak fabric will slow down the wind.
