Natural Pesticides
Most yard and garden pesticides available today are synthesized chemicals.

Pesticides derived from natural mineral or botanical sources are an alternative to chemical pesticides for organic gardeners. These substances may be organic, but they are still powerful, and in many cases poisonous.

Pesticide label directions provide information for the applicator's personal safety, safety to others and safety to the environment. Because so much is at stake, it's important to read and understand directions on pesticide labels before using them.

Pesticides can be valuable gardening tools, but they must be selected with personal and environmental safety in mind. As with other tools, it is important to use the right pesticide for the job.

All pesticides are toxic to some degree. This means they can pose some risk to you, to your children and pets, and to any wildlife that venture onto your lawn, especially if these chemicals are overused or carelessly applied.

Conventional gardening wisdom used to dictate spraying pesticides in gardens at least once or twice a month to combat the hoard of chewing, sucking and biting bugs that attack flowers and vegetables.

A few bugs are fine, but if your crop is in danger, you may want to consider applying a pesticide. Pesticides come in several different forms, but in most cases they're applied as a spray solution.

Pesticide selection. The best way to establish a predator mite population in an orchard is to conserve and promote those that exist naturally. This cannot be achieved unless pesticides are selected on the basis of their toxicity to predators.

pH: A measure of acidity and alkalinity - also see neutral.

Pesticides and fungicides should never be applied to the plants once the fruit has set.

Pesticides
First, make sure you are getting the right product to control your pest. Read the label. Herbicides kill all plants, not just weeds; insecticides do not help with diseases.

Pesticide - A chemical used to kill an organism considered a pest.
Petiole - A stalk that attaches the leaf to the stem; a leafstalk.

Pesticide resistance-The genetically acquired ability of an organism to survive a pesticide application at doses that once killed most individuals of the same species.

Acute pesticide poisoning-A toxic condition, usually a result of inhaling or swallowing a pesticide, and characterized by a rapid onset of severe symptoms. Can be fatal.

Pesticides and herbicides are a concern, degradability ranges from one to twelve months.

Remember, pesticides contain toxins that have only one purpose - to kill living things.
3. Less harm to the environment. Poisons are often washed into our waterways, causing death to the native fish and polluting their habitat.

Do not use pesticides.
Include nectar-producing plants that feature clusters of tubular-shaped flowers such as pentas. Other options include phlox and verbena. Tropical or red sage attracts butterflies and does best in dry locations.

Avoid using pesticides as much as possible to protect the bee population. If pesticide treatment is required, apply when bees are less active ? very early in the morning, just before dawn or just after sunset in the evening.

Many garden pesticides remain viable for years when stored in a cool, dry place.

DRIFT: when a pesticide is blown by wind onto nontarget organisms.
DWARF: Shorter than its normal growth. Each family of plants has a height recommendation for dwarfness.

SYSTEMIC -- A pesticide which goes inside the plant and travels in the sap stream.
TAP ROOT -- A strong root, sometimes swollen, which grows vertically into the soil or compost.

With the use of pesticides, the sprawling urban areas eating away at our natural land, and intensive farming practices, many wildlife species are becoming more and more dependent on us to provide their basic needs.

Do not use toxic pesticides and chemical fertilizers. Instead, use all-natural compost and biological pesticides such as predatory mites that will ward off pests.
