Pigment
A leaf's color comes from several pigments that exist in the leaf's cells (the same cells that support photosynthesis). The dominant pigment is chlorophyll, which gives the leaf its green color.

Pigment - The substance in paint or anything that absorbs light, producing (reflecting) the same color as the pigment.
Pollen - fine, yellow, dust-like microspores containing male genes.

Pigment is what creates colors. Green leaves contain the pigment chloropyll, which helps make food for the tree. Like some animals that hibernate, plants slow down and rest in winter.

Pigments in plants that make them look red to blue.
anti-desiccants
A substance sprayed on evergreen leaves to help prevent water loss during the winter.

These pigments, normally masked by chlorophyll, help protect leaves from excessive sunlight. Anthocyanins are actually toxic, and contribute to a plant's natural defense against insects.

The green pigment in leaves. When present and healthy usually dominates all other pigments.
complete fertilizer
A plant food which contains all three of the primary elements... nitrogen, phosphorus and potassium.

Leaves contain pigments that visually tell us that a tree is undergoing a transition. In the fall, we observe this transition by watching the leaves change color. A given season's weather determines how much pigment we see.

Decorative materials can be used for ornamentation to create a mood, tell a story or relay any idea that strikes the imagination.

A yellowish/orange pigment associated with fall leaf colors. Carotenes are present in lesser amounts than the other yellow pigment - xanthophyll.

(L. tannum, oak bark) complex aromatic compounds some of which are glucosides, possibly giving protection or concerned with pigment formation.taxon search for term- n. (Gr. taxis, arrangement) a taxonomic category or unit, as a species or genus.

Chlorophyll A group of green pigments within the plants cells which effect the conversion of solar to chemical energy by the process of photosynthesis. Chlorosis A yellowing of the leaves of a plant due to a lack of chlorophyll.

It lives on the pads of certain prickly pears (Opuntia) and makes a red pigment that it stores in its body. The pads are colonized by female insects which are about ¼ inch long and are purplish black inside and silver outside.

Venetian plaster, a centuries-old technique for creating luminous pigmented surfaces, is alive and well. But it's time-consuming, laborious and not inexpensive, requiring hand-troweling multiple layers of lime-based plaster to a wall or other surface.

UV-Resistant Clears are not "water" clear, but rather products that impart a slight color tone from the use of transparent transoxide pigments or titanium dioxide and penetrate into the wood surface.

Contrasting colour are those which are a different as possible from each other and therefore share no common colour pigment. They are literally `poles apart` and so are identified as being those which sit opposite each other on the colour wheel ...

Pigments and light use the same elementary color range found in the wedge-divided circle known as the spectrum.

Different trees contain different pigments. To be sure of fall color, you may want to choose a tree in the fall. And fall, is an ideal time to plant. Many people erroneously think that all trees of one species turn brilliant hues in the fall.

Iron aids in production of the green plant pigment, chlorophyll, as well as in plant enzyme functions. If the soil is too alkaline, with a pH over 7, iron may not be available to the plant. Soggy, poorly aerated soils also inhibit iron release.

Yellow and orange pigments (carotenoids) that have always been present in the leaves now become visible while red pigments (anthocyanins) develop only in the fall.

Better yet, the classic beet's red coloring comes from betalains—a combination of the purple pigment betacyanin and the yellow pigment betaxanthin. "The betalain pigments are potent antioxidants," says Irwin Goldman, Ph.D.

A blueberry and a purple carrot both provide your body with antioxidants, blueberries are in anthocyanin pigments which are powerful antioxidants.

Chlorophyll - The green pigment that is necessary for photosynthesis.
Chlorosis - Yellowing of foliage due to a loss or breakdown of chlorophyll. Chlorosis may result from disease or infestation, poor growing conditions, or lack of nutrients.

Research has shown that spinach is one of the richest vegetable sources of lutein, a natural plant pigment that protects the eyes against age-related macular degeneration and cataracts.

CHLOROPHYLL: The green pigment in leaves. When present and healthy usually dominates all other pigments.
CHLOROSIS: An abnormal yellowing or blanching of the leaves due to lack of chlorophyll.

Chlorophyll - A green pigment found in chloroplasts that is used in photosynthesis.
Chloroplast - The organelle in plants and some protists that absorbs sunlight and uses the enery to synthesis organic compunds from CO2 and H2O.

Chlorophyll: The green pigment in leaves. When a plant is healthy it is very prominent.
Chlorosis: A yellowing of the leaves due to lack of chlorophyll. Chlorosis is often caused by an iron deficiency in the soil.

chlorophyll The green pigment in plants. Responsible for trapping light energy for photosynthesis.
chloroplast A specialized component of certain cells. Contains chlorophyll and is responsible for photosynthesis.

chlorophyll. The green pigment of plants that captures the energy from sunlight necessary for photosynthesis.
chlorosis. Yellowing or bleaching of normally green plant tissue usually caused by the loss of chlorophyll.

The nitrogen-based red pigments of beets, Beta spp., and other Chenopodiaceae, as well as flowers of Cactaceae, Portulacaceae, and others.

As the green chlorophyll breaks down, pigments of yellow and orange are revealed. And majestic reds and purples—they begin to develop in the leaves of maples, dogwoods and sweet gums.

For pigmented colors, like paint, complementary color pairs include: orange opposed to blue, green opposed to red, and violet opposed to yellow.

You can stain the mortar with a pigment for a more natural look. Coat the back of each stone with the bonding agent and press it firmly into the mortar (figure D). Give each face time to dry before moving on to the next one.

stigma -- The sticky tip of a pistil. Or, the dense region of pigments found in many photosynthetic protists which is sensitive to light, and thus functions somewhat like a miniature eye.More info?
stipe -- A scientific term for "stalk".

They lack a photosynthetic pigment. Their main contribution to a compost pile is to break down cellulose and lignin, after faster acting bacteria make inroads on them.

CHLOROPHYLL - The green pigment in leaves. It will be dominant in the plant when present or healthy.

When the sun begins it's decline, and temperatures drop below freezing, a signal is sent to the tree telling that it is time to stop producing food with its chlorophyll and allow a blend of pigments that have been present and patient all year, ...

Combine herbs with richly hued vegetables like sweet potatoes, winter squash, kale, and spinach for a double punch: deeply pigmented vegetables also tend to be high in antioxidants.

Some varieties of celosia grow only 10 inches tall while some reach three feet. The plants like plenty of sun and a well drained soil.
The main colors are red and yellow but orange is available. Some varieties have pigmented leaves that add to the ...

blooming Potassium (K)--important for disease resistance and aids growth in extreme temperatures Sulfur (S)--contributes to healthy, dark green color in leaves Calcium (Ca)--promotes new root and shoot growth Magnesium (Mg)--chlorophyll, the pigment ...

These cultivars need a few hours of sun each day to maintain the maroon pigment, which also appears in the flowers, giving them a pink cast. C. racemosa is one of the tallest species and blooms ahead of other species, in summer.
