Pinch out all the sideshoots that appear between leaf and stem when 2.5cm (1in) long, and once five or six trusses of fruit have begun to set, pinch out the main stem so that they develop fully.

Step four -Pruning. For a pleasing look to your standard, a good ratio to keep in mind as you're pruning is 2/3 stem to 1/3 head.

Pinch out the tops of the growing buds to make the plant bushier, and remove old blooms once they start to turn brown. This will help keep the plant blooming well all the way to the first frost.

In the home garden, pinch out terminal buds (the sprout at the top of the plant) about a month before the anticipated first frosts.

Pinch out the bud from the tip of each branch, so that fruit buds form lower down the branches. As a result of this shaping, the tree won't grow very big but it will keep on bearing.
Even better, grow your fruit trees flat against a wall or fence.

Pinch out the center shoot in each plant for bushier growth.
Try acclimating your flowers to the weather by moving them outdoors for a few hours each day before planting them in the flowerbed.

For best bloom pinch out weak growth and allow only four to five main stems per plant. Powdery mildew, rust and spider mites can be a problem, especially when the weather is hot and dry. If so, put your phlox on the same spray schedule as the roses.

2. In the summer, when the new canes reach about 20 inches tall, pinch out the top two inches to keep them at 18 inches. Do this weekly for several weeks until all the new canes (primocanes) have reached the desired height and been pinched back.

So prune or pinch out all but about three of the largest, healthiest looking fruits. Later in the season, you might want to thin down to just one, but keep a couple of extras at the beginning for insurance.

Throughout the growing season, cut back shoots of maples 1 zelkovas2 and other broad-leaves to the first or second pair of leaves. Pinch out the tips of juniper shoots 3.

When the shoot reaches just above the cordon wire, pinch out the tip to force lateral branching. Train laterals (arms or cordons) down the wires, tying regularly to keep the cordon straight and in place. See Figure 10.

(The plant is attempting to keep its root system in balance by regrowing its top.) Pinch out the growing tip of a stem and the effect is modest; cut back a shoot by two thirds and the result is an onslaught of sprouting lateral buds.

Hang the lights 6 inches (15 cm) from plants and leave on for 14 hours a day. Dill does not transplant well and it needs a deep pot for its long taproots. Pinch out the tops to prevent flowering and seed setting to keep plants growing longer.

If you only want your plant to become bushier, simply pinch out the tips while the plant is dormant. Pinching will usually promote a heavier bloom the following year.
