Some plant tags don't stop there. They include pictures, info on how far a plant should be spaced, how often it should be watered, what type of drainage and soil it needs, and the plant's pest tolerance. Some even include a nursery's Website.

 


Study plant tags carefully before making your selection, because the tags often contain useful information about plant size, spacing, and requirements for sun or shade.

Read the plant tags on seedling cell packs -- they offer valuable information and may list any inbred resistance to diseases and pests.

In catalogs or on plant tags, variety names follow the genus and species names and may be preceded by the letters ssp. indicating a subspecies; var. or simply v designates variety. Cornus florida is the Latin name for the common flowering dogwood.

Follow the instructions on the plant tag as to spacing, watering and light requirements. If the tag says to plant 8 to 12 inches apart, opt for the 8 inches. That means the gaps will fill in more quickly.

Keep plant tags when purchasing seedlings or seeds for their wealth of information. Follow planting instructions when it comes to spacing, sun, water and soil types.

Most plants like a somewhat neutral pH, 6.2 - 6.8, but some are more particular. If you are growing plants from the nursery, check the plant tag for specifics. If no pH preference is listed, a neutral range is fine.

After you've determined your zone, you can buy plants with the confidence that they will last a long long time in your garden. Most informative plant tags will tell you what zones they can be expected to grow in.
