Plugs have more roots then sprigs and can grow horizontally across, and usually establish a full lawn in less time the springing and seeding.
Plugs can cost a little less then sod if they are planted and spaced in excess of 3 inches apart.
Why plugs or sprigs? They're cheaper that sod, and they give you a mature lawn faster than sowing seed can. The trade-off is that installation is time- and labor-intensive, and plugs and sprigs require care to achieve even coverage.
Planting Plugs
Designate the part of your lawn or yard that you will become the planting area. Be sure to clear the area of weeds or unwanted plants. Check that your sprinklers are working well. Fill the area with fertilizer and lime or sulfur.

Why Plugs?
Gardeners should like plugs for some of the same reasons nurseries do. Good plugs are stocky and actively growing, both above ground and below. By contrast, blooming garden-center plants have reached an end point.
Plugs are young plants that are more advanced in their growth than seedlings and are ready to plant out immediately. Plugs should have good root growth and the leaves and shoots are not damaged or turning yellow.

There are three common methods for planting your new lawn, seeding sod, and by plugs. The most cost effective method is by seeding, but this is a slow process. If you are looking for an instant lawn, sod is your answer.
Lawn aeration equipment will pull "cores or plugs of soil out of the ground, letting air in. These plugs should be 2"-3" in depth. Such a plug should be pulled out of the lawn at about every 3".
Lawn aeration involves the removal of small soil plugs or cores out of the lawn. Although hand aerators are available, most aeration is done mechanically with a machine having hollow tines or spoons mounted on a disk or drum.
The best way to do this is to get a square mouth spade and cut out a number of plugs of lawn from areas which are growing well. Replace some soil into the holes that have developed, they will cover over in time.
The other aerator punches plugs into the lawn, pulls them out, and leaves them on top of the ground.
A typical claim is that conventional aeration or core cultivation - where plugs of soil are pulled from the lawn - can be replaced by a product sprayed on the lawn.
Second was sod rolls or plugs. Either one will work. The plugs will be slower, but cheaper. Rolls are quick but expensive. With plugs, you simply put in a hunk of sod every 18" and let the grass spread naturally.
This procedure removes small cores or plugs of soil from your lawn. It should be done if soil is compacted or to break through thatch that's deeper than a 1/2 inch. Thatch is the build-up of dead grass, roots and stems that collect on your lawn.
For compacted or thatch-choked areas, or possibly under the canopy of trees and shrubs, the best treatment is to aerate the soil by removing plugs.
Bermuda grass is planted from sod, seed, plugs or sprigs. Sprigs are Bermuda grass rhizomes.

Container gardening is more than just a fad; it is a long-term solution that allows.
The corer removes plugs of soil about 3cm deep giving better drainage. This aeration allows the water and fertilisers better penetration into the soil and the results will be evident in a visibly healthier lawn.

However, lettuce likes a temperature around 70o to germinate, so early plantings should be started as plugs.

Now is the best time of the year to plant Zoysia grass, a tough and beautiful grass grown from stolons or plugs. The grass is drought-tolerant, chokes out weeds on its own, and is bothered by few pests.
Augustine will readily fill in bare spots if a few plugs or sprigs of healthy grass are planted in these areas. Re-seeding is an option with common bermudagrass and tall fescue.
