Plumeria, also known as frangipani, is a 30- to 40-foot tree that thrives in tropical regions. Outside of its preferred growing environment, plumeria grows as a large shrub or small tree.

This shrub prefers full sun but will tolerate partial shade. Growing the shrub in a xeric (low-water) area is best, but it will tolerate moderate watering.

Apache plume has attractive white flowers from June through August, followed by feathery, pink-plumed seeds that give the shrub its common name. Its stems have white, shreddy bark.

Among plume types, the 'Castle' series is invaluable for its lush, feathery, 15 in (38 cm) tall flower spikes.

Tall blades and plumes of ornamental grasses look great in the off-season, thanks to their unique shapes and heights. Select grasses suited for your area that are not invasive. Look for ones with good winter foliage and eye-catching seed heads.
