A pole pruner for removing tree limbs less than 2 inches in diameter that are out of the reach of lopping shears. Extendable pieces allow for an additional 15 feet or so, and saw attachments manage branches that are more than 2 inches thick.

 


Pole pruners solve that "I'll get the ladder out and prune those trees.just not today." problem.

Use pole pruners to cut out-of-reach branches up to 2 inches in diameter. Pole pruners consist of blades attached to stationary hooks which are mounted on long wooden or aluminum poles.

Most pole pruners work on some type of rope and pulley system. You don't actually have to move the pole, but getting it in the right place can be challenge enough. Once it's in position, you work the rope, which works the blade.

Pole pruners are convenient for removing smaller limbs, like those on fruit trees. Large limbs or harder woods may require an extended-reach saw.

You can probably cut lighter branches yourself with a pole pruner, says Bob Rouse, director of accreditation for the Tree Care Industry Association (TCIA).

For limbs up to 30 feet high, use pole pruners. Hand saws are the most common tool for homeowner pruning, but take extreme care when pruning with a power chain saw. Avoid power tools not specifically designed for pruning.

When in full foliage you'll have not only a beautiful tree but one that twinkles after dark. Its only down side: spent flowers in late June. They aren't exactly a picture of elegance, so you'll need a pole pruner to dead head the wasted blooms.
