Bumblebee nests rarely exceed 200 individuals. The key to keeping a strong and healthy colony is to provide it with a succession of flowers from spring through frost.

Every garden needs pollinators and bees are among the best. Without them there would be limited flowers and even fewer fruits and vegetables.

Orchids and Their Pollinators
Some flowering plants are promiscuous, relying on enticement and reward to lure whatever insect comes along. But orchids typically have exclusive relationships with their pollinators.

If you water your garden like this, especially if you water in the morning and evening when insect pollinators are most active, this can create the same sort of conditions as too much rain which will keep pollinators away.

Bees are the workhorses of the pollinators. Although honeybee populations are declining in the U.S., there are more than 4000 native bee species in the U.S. The U.S.

Pollinators and Their Favorite Flowers
Ants -- Although ants like pollen and nectar, they aren't good pollinators, so many flowers have sticky hairs or other mechanisms to keep them out.

Pollinators-insects such as bees, birds, butterflies, and flies that carry pollen from one flower to another. PH-in gardening, a measure of the acidity or alkalinity of the soil, where 7.0 is considered neutral and numbers below 7.

Lack of Pollinators: A disease affecting honeybees has devasted their population in many areas. There are many other insects that step in and inadvertently do the job....sometimes. Some are harmful insects, some are harmless.

Give pollinators a reason to come to your garden, and you'll enjoy bigger harvests.

Plant for pollinators
Butterflies, bees, hummingbirds and moths play an essential role in our gardens. They pollinate the flowers we enjoy and our kitchen gardens filled with tomatoes, cucumbers and peppers.

Apples also need pollinators—certain wasps, flies, and bees—to transfer pollen from one variety to the other. The apple trees must be planted within 100 feet of each other in order to help ensure that the pollinators visit both trees.

Bees are beneficial pollinators and control for them is discouraged. Honeybees and bumblebees work blooming flowers and may cross paths with people. Typically bees are not aggressive unless an unwary gardener grasps them.

Flower colours have developed to attract the appropriate species of pollinators, which can be birds, bees, spiders, animals or insects. Once the pollinator finds the flower, a little bit of sexual hanky-panky takes place.

Plants either have all the parts to pollinate themselves, (called self-pollinators) or they are aided in accomplishing this by insects, the wind, or human intervention (cross-pollinators).

Parsley (as well as Dill and Fennel) is also a wonderful choice for attracting one of nature's pollinators, the Black Swallowtail Butterfly, to your vegetable and herb garden.

Unlike honeybees they are native to the region and are extremely important pollinators of many native plants, perhaps being most obvious at alpine elevations.

They are not self pollinators like the Japanese apple trees. I self pollinated my apple tree this year by getting branches from the nursery I purchased it from. I did buy a second tree but it is young and the blossoms will not come until next year.

Simply put, this means that even the most industrious bee (bees are the chief pollinators of apple trees) can't persuade two trees of the same variety to bear fruit. So, to grow apples you usually need two trees of different varieties.

The strip comes into full glory from early summer through fall, when showy flowers and herbs attract songbirds, butterflies, bumblebees, and other pollinators.

The whip and tongue graft is very useful for adding new varieties or pollinators to established trees, as well as grafting one or two year old seedlings with named fruiting varieties.

Pollen grains are transferred to the stigma by a variety of agents, including wind, water, insects, and other animal pollinators.

Flowering Plums seldom produce fruit due to a lack of pollinators when they bloom, but the dark purple plums are edible. The fragrant, one inch, pink flowers appear in early spring followed by purple foliage which turns green by mid-summer

Cosmos flowers are ideal for a butterfly or bird garden and are a natural companion for vegetables in organic gardens as they attract these pollinators. They make superb cut flowers and look right at home growing randomly in wildflower gardens.

nectar guide A contrasting color pattern on a flower that guides pollinators to the nectar.
nectary A gland secreting nectar.
nematocide A material that kills or protects against nematodes.

NECTAR: A sugar and water substance secreted by flowers, this will attract pollinators like bees.
NEEM: A botanical insecticide that is nontoxic. It is derived from the neem tree.

Honey bees are the main pollinators of fruit blossom but bees work best at temperatures of 15 C (60 F) and above, so if possible plant new trees where they will be sheltered from the wind.

The honey-like liquid secreted by plants. It's commonly found in flowers, and attracts bees and insect pollinators.
Nectary
The gland at the base of the corolla, which secretes nectar.

Small outgrowths on the throat of the corolla of some plants, often acting as tactile guides for pollinators.

2. Oregon grape (Mahonia aquifolium): Zone 5; to 6 feet tall; yellow flowers; evergreen. Early pollinators appreciate the sumptuously scented clusters of golden flowers.

Sometimes the calyx have a petaloid appearance (fleshy, bit and coloured sepals) that helps the flower to atract pollinators (examples: Orchids, Passion Flowers, Mussaendas).

beneficials. Organisms that provide a benefit to crop production, applied especially to natural enemies of pests and to pollinators such as bees.

The British butterfly population is in decline, and with the exception of the large and small white, they do little harm in the garden; in fact most of them are good pollinators.

petal -- One of the outer appendages of a flower, located between the outer sepals and the stamens. Petals often display bright colors that serve to attract pollinators. More info?

Have you ever noticed the tiny purplish-black floweret in the center of the otherwise white flower? The black floweret is sterile and will not produce seed. It is not known why nature put it there, perhaps to attract pollinators.

organic gardens are often havens for bees and other beneficial insects that thrive on the diversity of flowering plants that are available to them. More importantly, organic gardeners don't spray long-lasting insecticides that kill pollinators.

They also have a wonderful fall color, not to mention, large colorful fruits. There are varieties which are self-fruitful and those that need cross pollinators. They grow best on deep, fertile soil, but will produce even on poorer sites.

and Colorado potato beetle, as well as several other caterpillar species. Bt is a bacteria that kills these pests by attacking their digestive systems, essentially killing them from the inside out. Bt is not toxic to humans, pets, or pollinators.
