Apple growing is a science called pomology. Apples do not grow "true" from seed. If you plant the seed from an apple core, the tree that grows from it will not produce fruit exactly like the apple from which it came.

The golden age of American pomology came to an abrupt end in the early 20th century. Inexpensive railway shipping and mechanical refrigeration enabled orchards to distribute apples year-round. Home orcharding declined as suburbs emerged.

A whole field of study called "pomology" evolved, to study the benefits of apples and other firm fruit. Even today, more and more evidence is piling up in support of the apple. So, munch, crunch, and enjoy! ...
