them hostile to root development.
Tamp the pot down on your potting bench or other flat surface several times to encourage the media to settle. The plant and the media should settle together to the correct reservoir depth.
There are all sizes and shapes of patio furniture from garden benches and tables, to shelves and umbrellas and potting benches. There are kneeling benches, work stools and rolling carts to make the gardening tasks easier.
If not, knock the edge of the pot against a sturdy surface, such as a potting bench, still holding the pot with both hands. It may take a few good whacks to release the plant; be careful not to break the pot.
So what I do is chip off a section of the pile from the edge, spread it out on the ground so it's only about 8" deep, then run over it with my small rototiller. This mixes it together perfectly, and I shovel it onto the potting bench.
