Potting Mixtures, Containers and Repotting
You'll need loam, a mixture of organic and mineral materials (50% space and 50% matter), to ensure optimum plant growth and necessary nutrition.

Potting Mixtures
Potting plants is a very satisfying job. A common question is why should you use potting mix over ordinary soil?

All potting mixes are not created equal. Your container plantings need soil that holds some moisture but drains well and offers plants a rich supply of nutrients.

Most potting mixes are soil-less mixes. Soil is heavy and doesn't have the moisture-holding capacity or the fluffiness that potting mix needs to have. In addition, soil can harbor insect and disease pests that harm your plants.

Consumers Beware Potting Mix Choices
By Carl Wilson, Extension Horticulturist
There's nothing more frustrating then potting a container plant only to experience poor plant growth. In many cases your lack of a "green thumb" may not be at fault.

'Almost-homemade' potting mixes are very easy to put together. More importantly, you'll always end up with a much better-quality plant.

Potting Mixtures. A soil-less mix is by far the best potting medium for seed starting. It is commonly made of peat moss, perlite, and vermiculite.

Add potting mix. Purchase a sterile potting mix containing peat, perlite, and other ingredients that improve drainage, aeration, fertility, and water-holding capacity. Consider using a water-absorbing polymer to decrease watering frequency.

Potting mix elements
When repotting orchids, says Woodson, it's less important what you pot them in than how you manage the plants after repotting them. She uses a combination potting mix of Douglas fir bark, giant perlite and activated charcoal.

POTTING MIX: Pre-packaged ready-to-use soil mixture that may include sand, compost, vermiculite, and peat moss.
POTTING SOIL: A soil mixture designed for use in container gardens and potted plants.

The potting mixture for tuberous begonias should also be rich in organic matter. My recipe calls for one-third peat, one-third garden soil, somewhat sandy, and one-third leaf mold, compost or well-rotted manure.

Light potting mixes allows better drainage. Bake homemade potting soil or use sterile "soil-less" mixtures. Fertilize with half-strength liquid.

Keep the potting mix moist while the seeds are germinating. A spray bottle to water the surface gently without washing the potting mix out of the containers may be useful, or water can be added to the tray and allowed to move up into the mix.

A layer of potting mix is placed into the bottom of the basket. Take the plant from the pot and lay it on any angle of approximately 45 degrees.
This will ensure that the growth will begin to suspend some little distance from the edge of the basket.

Moisten the potting mix and put a layer in the bottom of the pot. Set the plant in the pot and fill in with more potting mix. You want the crown, the point where roots and stems meet, to be level with the surface of the mix. Water thoroughly.

All-purpose potting mixes are fine for gardeners who like to add ingredients to customize their mix with plant food.

3. Put some potting mix into the new pot
4. Center the plant and plant it at a depth of ½ inch from the top of the pot
5. Plant it no deeper than the top of the root ball. If you plant it too deep, it will rot, and too high, it will dry out ...

Potting mixes with garden loam should be avoided, as loam is highly variable from shovel-full to shovel-full, and must be pasteurized in the kitchen oven (not microwave). This process of pasteurizing your own soil can be difficult and smelly.

A good indoor potting mix is usually composed of peat moss, vermiculite and perlite. These soilless mixes absorb moisture very well and resist compaction, but they tend to dry out very quickly.

Improve the Potting Mix: Use a potting mix that's quick-draining, water-retentive, and nutrient-rich. Consider adding an inorganic soil conditioner to your mix.

The right orchid potting mix is essential for the success with these plants. The mixtures have to be coarse and allow a lot of air near the roots. It should not break down and compact too quickly.

Before adding the potting mix to the container, place fibreglass screening (available at hardware stores) or landscape cloth over the holes in the base to keep soil in and unwanted creatures out.

Using Compost in Potting Mixes
You can also blend fine-textured compost in potting mixtures. However, make sure the compost does not make up more than one quarter to one half of the potting mixture’s volume.

Add soil/compost/potting mix to fill.

Water thoroughly, until water runs out the drain holes.

Do you use a lot of potting mix with added peat moss for your containers? If so, you may worry that peat bogs can’t keep up with the demand. Use coconut coir instead.

Use a good commercial potting mix with extra perlite, granite grit, or coarse sand added. You may also use a packaged 'cacti mix' soil.
Fertilize yearly, in the spring with half strength, bloom type fertilizer (10-40-10).

Drainage is also a consideration when it comes to potting mix. Look for a soilless potting medium and mix about three parts of that to one part builders' sand.

They are not to fussy about potting mix, most general mix is okay, but they do not like to dry out, so maintain the moisture, this is generally not such a problem if you are growing them in the shade.

Part fill the pot with potting mix, add fertiliser and place the bulbs on top of the mix so that their tips are level with, or just above, the brim of the pot. The bulbs should be planted as closely as `shoulder to shoulder` for an effective result.

Sow the seeds indoors in a loose potting mixture about 6 to 8 weeks before the last expected date of frost in the Spring. Soil temperatures should be between 70° and 75° F for optimum germination. Most seed germinates in 6 to 12 days.

Unfortunately, some products traditionally labeled potting mix can include a multitude of ingredients, not all of which are particularly good for seed germination and root growth. You must read the label to know what's really in the bag.

Plant seeds in a sterile, soilless potting mix or in seed flats. Start impatiens seeds well in advance of spring; you can plant seeds indoors 6 to 10 weeks before setting the seedlings outside.

Pre-moisten the potting mix so that it's wet but not soggy. When you squeeze it in your hand, no water should come out. The soil should form a ball that falls apart when you poke it.

The soil for cacti such as a potting mix should be loose and porous so that no wet puddles can form. It should also be lime-free and of ample quantity, and not contain too many nutritive materials.

Plant the callused pencil cactus stem in the prepared potting mixture. Water the soil well, then place the container in a warm, bright spot. Keep the soil lightly moist while the stem is rooting.

Plant them in light, well-draining potting mix. Cover seeds that don't require light with a thin dusting of vermiculite or potting soil. Otherwise lay the seeds on top of the soil so light reaches them.

Soil Type: A well-draining potting mix.
Planting: Plant from November to February in a container that is 1 to 2 inches wider than the bulb. Use a rich potting mix and make sure the bulb's shoulders are just above the soil surface.

If you ever move a plant from a soil-based situation to hydroponics, remove all traces of soil or potting mix from the roots. Soil holds lots of microbes and other organisms and materials that love to grow in and contaminate your hydroponic system.

You can make your own potting mix, but it's time consuming and bit messy for indoors. Plus, it's easy enough to find clean potting mixtures that have been pasteurized to kill insects, weed seeds and plant diseases.

Because the necessary frequent watering leaches nutrients from potting mix, container plants need regular feeding. Apply a liquid fertilizer every 2 weeks; or mix a controlled-release fertilizer into the potting mix before planting.

Choose a good-quality potting mix. The soil-less potting mixes make great choices for growing veggies. They are rather low in nutrients, so you will need to fertilize the plants on a regular basis.

LEAF MOULD: Partially decayed leaves used in some potting mixtures. It must be sieved and sterilized before use.
LEAFLET: A leaf-like section of a compound leaf.
LEAF ROLLER: Different moths that will roll leaves when larvae.

standard soil-less potting mixture is adequate, but for the others soil-based potting
soil is preferable. Providing that there are no sharp temperature fluctuations and
there is always plenty of light, the young plants should develop well.

When compost is ready it will look like potting mix with a dark brown appearance, crumbly texture and a sweet earthy smell.
Troubleshooting Tips

When taking cuttings for rootstocks, use albo-lacinatus (Ruth Wilcox), Landersii (Pride of Hankins), Archerii or Pink Psyche.

Plant them in a shallow pot, in well-drained potting mix. Position the bulbs with their flat sides facing towards the edges of the pot. Lightly water the pots, place them in sealed plastic bags, and chill at 3 ...

Replant each one individually, along with a piece of root, in a container filled with a potting mix composed of soil and peat moss. Set the plantlets at the same depth at which the mother plant grew.

Re-pot in a pot or tub just one size larger and settle it back in with a good balanced potting mix all around.

Lavender needs free draining and light soil to prosper. You might try re-potting in a sandier or grittier potting mix. This is the perfect time of year to take a few semi-ripe cuttings to propagate some new plants - just in case.

Vermiculite The mineral mica, heated to the point of expansion. A good addition to container potting mixes, vermiculite retains moisture and air within the soil.

Vernal Related to spring.

Assuming there is adequate length after I cut off the bad end, Irinse the cutting in disinfectant and start again in fresh potting mix.

You don't want to use dirt that you have gotten from outside due to it not being very good for the small area that you'll be using. The soil-less potting mix also is usually sterilized so you start with a disease free mixture.
