Pre-emergent herbicides are recommended primarily to control grassy weeds, such as crabgrass or foxtail, before they germinate.

 


Pre-emergent herbicides prevent seed germination. When applied in early to mid-April, a pre-emergent herbicide can provide extra insurance against the invasion of annual grassy weeds.

Pre-emergent herbicides are designed to keep weed seeds from germinating and growing. These chemicals only work if used exactly as directed, so read the label.

Pre-emergent herbicides, or weed preventers, control crabgrass and other weeds by stopping their seeds from germinating. An application early in the growing season works wonders; it's like vaccinating your lawn against weeds.

Pre-emergent herbicides, which prevent germination of weed and grass seed, require specialized accurate spray equipment. Pump-up garden sprayers and most other types of hand-gun equipment are unsuitable.

Q: Do pre-emergent herbicides really save weeding time?
A: Yes, pre-emergent herbicides - those that kill or prevent seeds from germinating before they emerge (hence the name) - are very effective.

Don't use a pre-emergent herbicide two weeks before or after sowing grass seed. "A pre-emergent herbicide works by preventing seeds from sprouting, so it will prevent the grass seeds from sprouting, too.

Next, as another preventative measure, use pre-emergent herbicides. Pre-emergent just means "kill it before it starts growing". Even in warmer climates, pre-emergents are beneficial.

Although, I try not to use chemicals, I have tried a pre-emergent herbicide that is incorporated into the soil as this will thwart seed germination and contribute a little fertilizer to existing plants.

To help keep them weed-free, I sprinkle a pre-emergent herbicide over the rows, and with the help of a tiller, they stay reasonably clean. For continuous bloom, plant every seven to 10 days from late April to early June (for my region).

Crabgrass
A villainous annual. Spreading, tall stems with blue to purple leaves, hairy. Likes underfed, lightly watered, short grasses. A thick turf is the best way to crowd it out, but a pre-emergent herbicide can be applied in the spring.

Later this month you can also apply the pre-emergent herbicide to prevent summer weeds. Try to find a stand alone product without fertilizer.
