Pruners are a tool no gardeners can be without. There are several styles, sizes and price ranges to choose from. Here's some advice on choosing the right garden pruner for you.

Perennials to prune for winter:
Perennials that harbor pests or disease over the winter such as botrytis-susceptible Paeonia (peony) and mildew-prone Phlox paniculata (garden phlox).

Trees such as elm, maple, walnut and birch are "bleeders" when pruned in late winter to early spring. This oozing sap is annoying when it drips on cars and sidewalks. There is disagreement as to whether the oozing is harmful to trees.

Climbing roses should be pruned twice a year - in early spring and again after they have bloomed. Climbing roses typically bloom on last year's canes, therefore, severe pruning is not necessary.

Regular pruning maximizes the beauty and romance of climbing roses. The process is simple once you know the basics. Prune at the same time you prune other roses.

Grapes can be pruned whenever the gardener has the time. Canes can be removed in the fall for Christmas wreaths, but pruning is ordinarily performed in March or early April before the buds begin to swell.

If you did not prune your summer blooming plants such as buddleia, crape myrtle and roses yet, get to it. Crape myrtles in particular don't need annual pruning, but if yours need to be pruned, get it done before spring growth kicks in.
