Pruners - Selecting Garden Pruners
Pruners are a tool no gardeners can be without. There are several styles, sizes and price ranges to choose from. Here's some advice on choosing the right garden pruner for you.

Garden pruners are great for cutting branches and weeds. Bypass pruners are the most common kind found in a gardener's toolbox.

Pruners are essential for light cutting in the garden. That includes everything from cutting back shrubs and pruning roses to gathering cut flowers.

Hand pruners. You'll want to have a set of good hand pruners with you at all times. What's a good set? They need to feel comfortable in your hand, they need to open easily and lock securely.

Bypass pruners: Hand pruners with sharp, curved, scissors-type blades that overlap each other. (They can cut branches up to ¾ inches in diameter.)

Hand pruners are lighter and more maneuverable than either loppers or shears. They are also the tool used most often for making precision snips, thinning out unwanted branches, and reaching places other tools can't.

Examine the sunflowers daily from the time they bloom until the fall. When the blooms start to wilt, cut them off 1/2-inch below the base of the flower, using hand pruners.

Hand pruners and lopping shears are used to cut small limbs, while pruning saws are used to cut larger branches. Hedge shears are used to trim bushes into a smooth shape.

"Put your pruners in the closet for the first few years and lock the door," says James Cummins, an experienced pear grower and nurseryman in Geneva, New York.

Use bypass pruners or plain kitchen shears.
Dig and move or divide ornamental grasses before they begin to grow in spring. Trim them back at the same time.
Plant ornamental grasses with their mature sizes in mind.

Long-handled Pruners
For the thicker old branches on large rose bushes you need a strong pruner. These will cut through them with ease and leave a clean cut.

Other garden tools used for cutting include hand pruners which are used for grooming your plants. Anvil pruners have one moving blade and bypass pruners have two moving blades. Which type you use is a matter of preference.

Long-handled tree pruners use a cord for manipulation and a pulley action. They have excellent leverage and come in large and small sizes. These pruners can get into small spaces and cut very thick branches.

Hand held pruners are great for smaller twigs, but larger branches will require a lopper or hand saw. Really big jobs call for a chain saw. Always use caution when using power tools.

The old hedge manual hedge trimmers; although this is labour intensive, many professionals still like to use manual pruners. Manual hedge trimmers tend to take a small amount of trimming each time.

There are several designs of pruners available.
Blade & Anvil (top left) and Hook & Blade (top center) pruners are both used for the same general pruning needs, but the anvil style has replaceable blades.

There are two styles, anvil pruners and bypass pruners. Anvil pruners have one blade that presses a branch against an "anvil," and cuts through it.

When harvesting, using gloves, use a sharp knife or pruners to avoid damaging the plant. One word of caution, don't rub your eyes while working with the fruit, oils will get on your hands and will
definitely irritate the eyes.

Hand pruners are useful for branches less than one-half an inch thick. Limb loppers should be used for branches one to one-and-one-half inches in diameter. For limbs up to 30 feet high, use pole pruners.

Wipe the pruners used for this pruning down with disinfectant wipes or dip pruners into a Clorox and water solution between each cutting.

Most hand pruners put the bulk of the work on your little finger -- one that isn't used to carrying the brunt of anything. If you've experienced hand fatigue before, you might want to try the Ames True Temper Reverse Pivot Ergo Pruner.

The tools used to prune your grapevines are hand pruners, loppers, and small handsaws. Select the appropriate pruning tool to remove the wood as cleanly as possible and reduce unnecessary injury to the vine.

- Apply some type of lubricant like Boeshield T-9 to your pruners, loppers and similar tools to ensure smooth operation of moving parts and to prevent rust from forming.
- Remove rust that has already formed.

When the flowers are dead, cut them off with a sharp pair of pruners and leave the foliage intact. Continue watering the plant as usual and be sure to keep it in a sunny area near a light source.

I am encouraged by the attempts of tree pruners to avoid drastic topping. We just need to make sure the alternatives involve "good" cuts, not more "bad" cuts. When we overcome that obstacle, all our trees will be safer.

For example, these sharp scissors or hand pruners are extremely important when preparing the flowers for long vase life.

- Harvest fruit when slightly immature, with smooth, glossy, firm flesh. Use pruners to cut fruit from the woody stems (wear gloves to avoid the sharp prickles on the berry calyx). Continually harvest fruit to encourage more flower production.

Keep proportions in mind as you work. The longest pieces should not exceed the height of the pot, or else the arrangement will look top-heavy. Keep a pair of pruners handy to trim greenery to suit your needs.

Cut down a canvas shoe organizer (we trimmed away two-thirds of our old 20-pouch shoe caddy and attached it to the door using wood screws). Fill the pockets with seed packets, plant markers, gloves, pruners, weeders, ...

It's a pain in the pruners to have to cut back a foundation bush or driveway tree every single year to keep it from taking over - why add an extra chore to your life when you can, with just a little forethought, avoid it?

pruning shears are ideal for removing succulent stems, up to 1/2 inch in diameter. Use loppers on branches that measure up to 2 inches in diameter and a pruning saw for thicker plant material. Prune the tops of tall plumeria trees with pole pruners.
