Pruning Saws - How to Prune Trees and Shrubs

There are times when nothing but a saw will do. If it's too big for a lopper, you need a saw. In a pinch, you can pull out any old saw and use it as a pruning saw.

Use on branches and always cut so there is no stump left. Start from where it grows out of another branch or next to the trunk, to the point at which you leave the raised 'collar' round the base of the branch.
A pruning saw is needed to cut through woody tree limbs, or to prune shrub branches more than 1 in (2.5 cm) thick.This saw is also available in a long-handled version for cutting tree branches that are beyond a gardeners reach.

These techniques can be used with most kinds of fruit trees. The best time to prune fruit trees is in late winter, before they leaf out. If your fruit tree has any weak lower limbs, remove them.

Pruning saws have stiff blades with teeth on both edges. One edge has fine teeth for cutting small branches and the other has large, coarse teeth suitable for cutting large branches. Some pruning saws have a curved handle and others a folding blade.
A pruning saw is used for pruning trees and larger shrubs, while secateurs are for plants like roses. Pruning saws have a narrow curved blade that fits between stems or branches and easily and cuts them as you pull the saw backwards.

Use pruning saws to remove stems you cannot cut with hand pruners or lopping shears. Pruning saws come in many sizes, with either straight or curved blades, and teeth that are either fine or coarse.
Some pruning saws have set blades, while others have folding ones.

Hand pruners and loppers with ratchet mechanisms are especially helpful for people with limited hand strength.
For homeowners a folding pruning saw will handle most jobs up to 2" and larger stuff should be tackled with a bow saw (up to 8").
When limbs break, the only recommended action is to use a pruning saw to make a smooth cut at the site of the jagged tear. Also take the opportunity to review peach tree pruning practices.
The best method of thinning is to select culms at least two years old and harvest them by cutting them close to the ground with a pruning saw. Open up the stand to encourage new culms all through the clump rather than just around the periphery.

Using a pair of secateurs or a pruning saw, carefully remove affected branches, leaving a clean cut that will heal quickly. Also remove any crossing or rubbing branches that are causing obstruction.
When trimming the trees in your yard, use pruning shears to remove smaller branches, and a pruning saw or chain saw for large limbs.
Hand pruners and lopping shears are used to cut small limbs, while pruning saws are used to cut larger branches. Hedge shears are used to trim bushes into a smooth shape.

Coppicing is done in early spring, about a month before new growth emerges. Use loppers or a pruning saw, depending on the size of the stem, and cut the stems back to five inches above the ground.
A pair of reasonable quality, large secateurs and a pair of lopping shears make most pruning jobs quick and simple. For large branches a pruning saw or even a chainsaw may be necessary.
