Pupae APB pupae are found under the bark, within the silken cocoons described above. The pupa itself is 11-12 mm long (slightly less than 1/2 inch), tan to dark brown, with black eyes.
Pupae: The pupae stage is where the grub starts to transform into a beetle. Japanese beetle pupae start out cream colored and age to a reddish brown.

Moths emerge from overwintering pupae in late spring (late April to May) and lay clusters of up to 500 greenish eggs on leaf surfaces of host trees.
Caterpillars take anything from a few weeks to a many months to develop into pupae, and it is from the pupae that they turn into a butterfly.
Shallow cultivation of the earth in fall helps by exposing the pupae to cold. Do this again in spring to expose them to predators. Agricultural fleece (row covers) may protect small plants from egg-laying flies, but this isn't a permanent solution.
For example, non-feeding growth stages (eggs, pupae) survive colder temperatures than feeding growth stages (larvae and adults, although not all larvae and adult stages feed actively.) Some insects improve chances of winter survival by building ...
Although some aspects of the cabbage worm life cycle are still being discovered, it is known that these pests can overwinter (as adults or pupae, depending on the species) on the debris left over from previous brassica crops.
Rose Midges are similar to a mosquito in shape, emerging from pupae in the soil, typically in the spring. The timing of their emergence is nearly perfect to the timing of the onset of new plant growth and flower buds formation.
Azalea leafminer over-winters as pupae in leaf mines. Rake and destroy fallen leaves in the fall to remove over-wintering pupae. Infested plants may be sprayed with a registered insecticide in May if many developing blotch mines are observed.
Some pupae hang from stems, some roll into leaves and some - cocoon-like - are found on the ground amid fallen leaves. The pupa of each species is unique.
Rove Beetles These beetles feed on soil-dwelling insects like Root maggot eggs, larvae and pupae, especially those of Cabbage maggots and Onion Maggots. They also eat slug and snail eggs.
The adult moths emerge in spring after overwintering as pupae in semitropical areas such as southern Florida. They migrate northward to lay eggs on leaves, buds, stems, and fruits of susceptible plants.
Loosen the soil with a fork or spade so that any remaining eggs, larvae, or pupae will be exposed to birds and cold temperatures. Mow or remove the weeds around your garden, since they can also harbor insect pests.
Others take advantage of a large host by laying many eggs in one caterpillar. The larvae grow and feed, and when the host dies, parasite pupae can be found clustered in what is left of the host's cocoon.
The larvae take 48 hours to hatch and the pupae live in water until it reaches the adult stage. It is the female mosquito that bites as she needs a blood meal before she can lay her eggs.
The mite sneaks into a larval cell and waits until a worker bee caps the cell, then lays eggs, which hatch and feed on bee pupae.
You can move the pupae to a cage at this point. A cylinder of wire screen or one-quarter-inch hardware cloth upended on a paper plate with another paper plate for a top is sufficient.
