A "raceme" is often found in gardens with flowers attached to a main stalk by means of smaller stalks ("pedicels"). The Black Snakeroot (Cimicifuga racemosa) and loosestrifes are examples of racemes.

Dense racemes of the beautiful deep red tubular flowers are born short stalks in the leaf axils in late spring. The flowering season is short, but very showy. A light prune after flowering will encourage a compact shape to the shrub.

When trained to climb a vertical structure, its long purple-blue or white racemes create a spectacular show in mid- to late-spring.

It can be distinguished by its 8- to 20-inch racemes of lilac flowers, appearing at the same time as its foliage.

The other category concerns spike flowers or racemes which are born on a central stem and have sequentially opening flowers, either from the bottom or the top. The object is to pick them when as many side spikes and therefore color is open.

This semi-evergreen, climbing, woody vine features rounded leaves and racemes of purple-brown blooms with a spicy fragrance. It grows as either a twining vine or aggressive groundcover and works well along fences in a sunny location.

It is a branched raceme with the upper branches usually progressively shorter.

Basil is an annual, so after it has grown its full share for the year, it will send out long racemes of tiny white flowers. Harvest your last leaves at this point. Stems will be getting woody.

An early common name for forget-me-not was scorpion's tail because the curved raceme of unopened flowers resemble a curled scorpion's tail.

The flower stalk can be up to one foot in length and bears a terminal one-sided raceme of drooping flowers.
The effect of a carpet of bluebells beneath trees is breathtaking.

It's a rare form of entertainment to see a nectar-seeking bumblebee's cumbersome bulk embrace a tiny barrenwort flower as the whole raceme bobs wildly up and down.

The two-lipped flowers are white, mauve or violet-blue and are about ½ inch long. They bloom in spring and summer in our climate and grow in short axillary racemes. The fruit is a very small, spherical nutlet.
