All seeds contain the embryo of the plant, including a radicle (which develops into a root), a tiny stem and one or two cotyledons (the first leaves). For many plants, developing a root system is the first order of business, so be patient! ...
The radicle is the first root developed and side roots grow from this root. The most important part of the root system is found behind the tip of the root - the root hair zone. These root hairs are single cells with a very short life span.
Hidden inside that coat is the radicle or beginning of a root, the hypocotyl or beginning of a shoot, either one or two seed leaves or cotyledons (the seed's food supply), and the epicotyl, which will become the first true leaves.
Hypocotyl- The part of an embryo or seedling below the cotyledon(s) and above the radicle (but sometimes including it).
Hypogeal- Describes seed germination in which the colytedons remain beneath the surface of the soil. (Cf Epigeal).
When this happens, a radicle (the root) emerges from the seed. This period can also be called "establishment," and indicates that germination is complete because the seedling is no longer relying on its food reserves.
Pre-sprout-Germinating seeds indoors between moist paper towels, rolled up and placed inside a perforated plastic bag. The sprouts are planted in the garden after radicles develop.
