Gardening Ray flowerRebloomer

The brown-yellow-tipped ray flowers of Ratibida columnifera unfurl around the brownish central disk, but you can sometimes find reddish and yellow petals, too.

After the ray flowers have fallen off, cover the head with a cheesecloth or paper bag to keep birds away until you cut it and bring it inside. Two varieties popular for seed production are 'Giant Grey Stripe' and 'Mammoth Russian'.

Ask a child to draw a flower and chances are you'll be presented with a daisy lookalike, a central disk surrounded by ray flowers. That's the hallmark of the aster family, Asteraceae, also known as the composite family, Compositae.

Spray dried flowers with a surface sealer to prevent them from re-hydrating or falling apart. Spray flowers outdoors, and place on a sheet of wax paper until they dry. Reattach the flowers and stems with floral wire and floral tape or a hot glue gun.

It's about 2 feet tall; flowers have drooping ray flowers of yellow, butterscotch, and brownish purple. There's a columnar brown disc, which makes the flower looks like a sombrero with a drooping brim.

Spreading from or arranged around a common center; bearing ray flowers.
