Reseeding
Fall is the perfect time to seed cool season grasses. In the colder climates you will want this done by September 15th in the warmer areas October 15th. Seed any bare spots after raking the area.

Reseeding of bare spots in your lawn can be done most of the year. An ideal time is in the late summer or early fall. You shouldn't reseed if there won't be time for the grass to become established before the winter cold.

A good mix for reseeding bare spots on lawns is:
5 parts sand
2 parts sterilized compost
1 part blood meal
1 part grass seed.

Deadhead to prevent reseeding.
If foliage deteriorates in summer, cut to ground to encourage a new flush of growth.
Divide in spring. Division required only every 6 to 10 years.

If you are planning on reseeding the spot, then make sure the soil is level with the ground.

Typically, ground covers sprawl, spread, run, or colonize by reseeding. Some ground covers will only grow in full shade, others thrive in full sun, and still others will survive no matter where you grow them.

Extra money for reseeding the areas that do not establish well should be considered from the start. Herbicides may be necessary in the first year after seed establishment and should be included in the computation.

Use a mixture of grasses when reseeding bare spots. A mix of various fescues, perennial ryegrass, and annual ryegrass works well. Creeping red fescue and chewings fescue establish quickly, tolerate cold, and adapt to drought and poor soil conditions.

Before the development of the native plant seed ball, reseeding some natural areas was difficult. The traditional method of broadcasting seed comes with several major drawbacks.

A lot of homeowners struggle with fertilizing, watering and especially, reseeding, in an effort to create a wall-to-wall carpet of grass, with little concern for where the turf might realistically grow well. But grass grows everywhere, right? Wrong.

And annuals may surprise you by reseeding themselves and coming back year after year. If you plant spider flower or periwinkle, learn to identify the seedlings, which will often appear in late spring near where the parent plants grew the year before.

Spread plenty of manure to fertilize your lawn, and reseeding. It is best to do this before it gets too cold, so mid-fall, before November, is a good time to proceed.

Finish reseeding by mid-April (mid-May in northern climates) to allow roots to become established before temperatures heat up. Keep the new seeds watered well. Dig up dandelions when you see them amid the turf.

Emphasize plant diversity with a palette of plants that naturally grow together, are reseeding, and spread without much maintenance. This strengthens the ecology of your yard requiring less fertilizer and pest control.
