Rhizobium

Gardening RevoluteRhizoid

These plants draw nitrogen from the atmosphere for themselves, as well as their neighbors, through bacteria in the soil known as rhizobium.

INOCULANTION - The addition of rhizobium to the soil, or applying it to the seed, prior to planting.
INORGANIC - A chemical or fertilizer which is not obtained from a source which is or has been alive.

Inoculation: To increase the plants' nitrogen fixation, treat soybeans at planting with Rhizobium japonicum inoculant, available through seed catalogs which sell edamame.
Spacing: Edamame are well-suited to dense plantings.

Some microorganisms are involved in mutually beneficial (symbiotic) relationships with plants. Rhizobium bacteria grow within the roots of some plants.

(Don't confuse seeds that have been inoculated with Rhizobium bacteria with seeds that have been treated with Captan or other toxic pesticides.
