Issue 72 Root Pruning - Video
In issue 72 we showed you some great design ideas to incorporate trees and shrubs growing in containers into your garden.

 


Root hairs are specialized cell extensions which penetrate into the openings between soil particles.

Root Biology
Plants have embryos that, once they have been fertilized, produce a radical, also called a primary root. Dicots, or dicotyledons, are plants that have two leaves that produce embryos and are the primary producers of taproot systems.

Root Cuttings
A root cutting is a piece of the root of a plant. These pieces should be two inches long and as thick as a pipe cleaner for the best results.

Root crops
Grow radish, carrot and spring onions as a summer salad crop. Sow rows from early April onwards at two-week intervals to get a constant supply. Thin to 2.5cm (1in) between plants for small, succulent roots.

Bare Root Storage
Dig you geraniums before the first frost.
Shake off as much soil as you can from the roots.

Tree Root Damage

Remove the tree from its pot by running a knife around the sides and knocking the outside with the heel of the hand.

The fungus is spread short distances through the soil by the root-like fungal strands, and contact plant roots, and penetrate the host.

Many of us think phosphorus promotes root growth because we're taught to place phosphates in the root zone, below the soil surface where the roots are growing.

Prevention is the key to controlling root rot. Cuttings should be taken from only disease-free plants. Pruning shears or knives should be cleaned with rubbing alcohol or a similar disinfectant.

Root cuttings
To root bay laurel take a 4 inch cutting of new growth and strip away all but the top 2 leaves, dip in rooting hormone and plant in a 1/2 sand 1/2 peat mix. Cover with clear plastic and place in a warm shady area.

Root-Bound
When a plant grows for too long in its container, it generally becomes root-bound. With no room for additional growth, roots become tangled, matted, and grow in circles.

Root Cuttings:
When the plant is actively growing (normally in the spring), remove the plant from the soil and wash the soil from the roots.

Root Over Rock Style
When a seed lands in a crack in a rock and finds enough soil to survive, the plant's roots may eventually grow to spread among the thin layers of soil and moss across the rock.

Root Suckers: These are the plants that climb with no help from supports. They have adhesive roots that allow them to climb bricks or other vertical surfaces on their own. Ivy and trumpet vine are two examples of plants with root suckers.

Root-Vegetative plant part that anchors the plant, absorbs water and minerals in solution, and often stores food. It is distinguished from a rhizome by not having nodes.

ROOT-BOUND - Often, when plants are left too long in their container, the roots become entangled and begin to grow in circles. There is hope by separating the roots the plants will survive when planted.

root-bound A condition in which a plant's roots have completely filled its container. Typically, the roots begin to encircle the pot's outer edge. Further growth is prevented until the plant is removed from the container.

The root system of a lawn grows down to around 30cm below the level of the lawn, however the top 20cm is the most important.

Tap root
The large, central root that grows downwards, and from which smaller, lateral roots grow.

Tap Root: The main root growing vertically into the soil.
Tender: A plant that has no resistance to frost.
Tendril: A thin, long stem used for attaching to nearby branches, trellis, fences, etc.

TAP ROOT -- A strong root, sometimes swollen, which grows vertically into the soil or compost.

Bare root. Bare root trees are usually extremely small trees. The advantage of planting bare root trees is mainly economical. They are less expensive to produce because of ease of harvesting, storing, and shipping.

Bare-root roses are available in early spring and are sold simply as a set of roots packed in peat moss or a similar material that holds moisture well. It's best to purchase bare-root roses when they're dormant or just beginning to grow.

Bare Root Stock: A plant that is prepared for packaging and shipping by removing all the soil around its roots.
Biological Pest Control: Using living organisms such as beneficial insects (ladybugs, lacewing) to destroy insect pests.

Bare-root plants are by far the cheapest: A bundle of 12 can cost as little as $30. And because they don't come set in several pounds of soil, they're easy to transport and plant.

Onion root maggots: Adults lay eggs at the bases of young plants. The white maggots burrow into the underground stems, causing the plants to wilt, turn yellow and possibly rot.

Top-to-root ratio or root-to-shoot ratio- The relative weights or volumes of the epicotyl and the hypocotyl of a tree seedling, expressed as a ratio.

For bare-root stock the planting procedure is the same except for you don't have to make vertical cuts. Bare-root stock is usually shipped in a wood mulch.

Root burn. Weeds. Slime and molds. These are just a few of the types of diseases that can infest your lawn and turn a beautiful yard into a real nightmare.

ROOT ZONE: The entire area where roots are growing below the plant. Root zones are important for walking paths and future plantings.
ROSARIAN: Those hobbyists or professionals who specialize in the cultivation of roses.

Root weevils are destructive pests of many plants including strawberries, raspberries, rhododendrons, euonymus, and azaleas.

Root grafting is sometimes performed in nurseries on parts of the roots of removed trees, when the proper stocks are scarce; in which case the root of the white thorn has been resorted to as a stock both for the apple and pear.

Root cuttings are taken during the dormant period when suitable plants are carefully
lifted. Small pieces of healthy root about 2.5cm (1in) long are removed. They should
not be thicker than a pencil, nor thin and stringy.

Root care - A professional should take care of any roots that are in the way and need removal. "Most trees can handle one sided root cutting," Johnson says.
