About root cuttings
Root cuttings need reasonable compost, a moderate but steady temperature, space and a little patience. But, unlike stem or leaf cuttings, root cuttings develop underground so you can't see what's going on.

 


The first step for how to root cuttings from hydrangea is to select a stem for cutting. In early Fall, choose a stem for hydrangea propagation that is at least 6 inches long, has no flower and is new growth.

Papaver orientale, Eryngium, Nepeta, Dicentra and Echinacea are among those which do well from root cuttings.

A root cutting is a piece of the root of a plant. These pieces should be two inches long and as thick as a pipe cleaner for the best results.

Root cuttings are taken during the dormant period when suitable plants are carefully
lifted. Small pieces of healthy root about 2.5cm (1in) long are removed. They should
not be thicker than a pencil, nor thin and stringy.

Root cuttings are an easy and effective way to create new herbs. You'll need a tray of small pots with a plastic cover, potting soil or potting medium, rooting hormone, pruning shears to cut the branches and a shaded area for your new cuttings.

Root cuttings are not often used as an important method of propagation, but many plants, such as bayberry, wisteria, some rose species, and oak-leaf hydrangea, can be propagated by this method.

Root cuttings are usually taken from 2- to 3-year-old plants during their dormant season when they have a large carbohydrate supply.

Difficult to divide. Divide in very early spring. Use care, as the roots are long and easily damaged.
Maintenance and care: Provide space between plants for adequate air circulation to reduce diseases.

You can root cuttings in a glass of water, but a more satisfactory method is to root them in a soil-less media. Take cuttings about six inches long, strip off the lower two or three sets of leaves and let them dry for 12 hours.

When we root cuttings we use coarse sand in the flats, so when it's time to pull the rooted cuttings out of the flats, the old sand goes on the compost pile. In our little backyard nursery we also have some plants in containers that do not survive.

Set either root cuttings or young plants 2 to 3 feet apart in a row. If you plant more than one row, space the rows 10 to 12 feet apart. The most productive varieties are erect and do not require a trellis or support.

To propagate by root cuttings: in the fall, cut the roots into 6" lengths and store in a moist mixture of sand and peat. In the spring, plant them in pots and move them to the nursery. By fall, they should ready to plant in the garden.

Most spurges can be propagated from root cuttings, which should be placed in water for a while to drain off the milky sap (otherwise, the latex may seal the stem and make rooting down difficult).

If placed in heavy soils, even with amendments, the roots will likely rot over the first rainy season. Romneya's seed requires fire to germinate in high numbers, so most plants are started by root cuttings and offsets.
