Root pruning involves severing the roots of a tree, all the way around the tree's circumference at the drip line. This can be done by slicing down with a sharp spade.

 


Repotting & Root Pruning:
Remove the tree from its pot by running a knife around the sides and knocking the outside with the heel of the hand.

Root pruning: Most rhododendron and azalea plants sold at nurseries and garden centers are sold in containers or have a root-ball that is covered with burlap.

ROOT PRUNING - This is done in two instances. One when repotting from one pot to another, roots that have grown in a circle are trimmed to promote future growth. Also, when planting into the garden or landscape, a plant that needs root trimming.

Root pruning is a practice adopted by many tree movers and nurseries selling ball and burlap trees.

Root pruning helps to maintain smaller sized, healthier plants by keeping the roots from becoming pot bound. Pruning the roots also stimulates root growth.

Root pruning may not be needed and is generally not recommended for succulents. Succulent roots are rarely vigorous when pruned, so the less disruption the better.

One remedy for the first circumstance, called "root pruning," involves making vertical slices with a sharp spade in a circle a few feet from the plant's main stem. Eliminating part of its root system encourages the plant to turn to flower-making.

And every 4-5 years, take the whole tree or shrub from its container for remedial root pruning. Just cut back the tips of all the visible roots and prune out most of the larger, woody roots before repotting.

Avoid high-nitrogen fertilizer near these plants. And if that doesn't work, try giving your trumpet vine a little root pruning. Don't overdo it—that can cause your plant to die—but a little can help encourage flowering.
