SALT MARSH HAY - probably a better mulch that is collected from the grasses grown in coastal marshes. It generally does not contain weed seeds and is fluffy.
Even though it is hardy to Zone 3, I give my planting of sorrel several inches of winter mulch to protect the roots from cold damage. Salt marsh hay, straw or other light, airy materials work just fine.
