Samara - A winged fruit.
Simple Leaf - A single leaf blade with a bud at the base of the leafstem.
Sinus - Indentation between lobes on a leaf.

 


Samara- A dry, indehiscent, winged fruit, one-seeded as in Fraxinus and Ulmus or two-seeded as in Acer.
Sapling- A tree more than 0.9 in (3 ft) in height and less than 10.2 cm (4 in) in d.b.h.

Samara A dry indehiscent fruit bearing a wing.
Saccate With a sac-like shape.
Saggitate Shaped like an arrowhead.

Seeds are samaras, 3/4 to 1" long, that ripen in early fall and persist into winter.
Bark is grayish brown, developing darker striations and furrows ('snakebark') with age.

Samara - indehiscent, one or two-seeded winged fruit, as in Acer rubrum (red maple).
Nuts - hard-shelled, usually one-seeded, indehiscent fruits, such as Juglans nigra (black walnut) or Carya illinoinensis (pecan).

amur maple (Amur ginnala) can either be a large shrub or a small tree, but it's more often limbed up to show off its strong sculptural form. One of the first maples to leaf out in the spring, the amur maple later offers reddish winged fruits (samara).
