Sampling Styles: Different Gardens on Display

Try sampling wild plants on an empty stomach with a clean palate. If you've just had a burger and fries, that dandelion is not going to taste like much.

Soil sampling doesn't have to be done every year if the same crop is to be grown in the same location, but it should be done every two to three years.

Just 2 years after planting, you can be sampling your own grapes; in 3 years, you can be harvesting up to 15 pounds of grapes from each vine - plenty for eating and making jellies, juice, or wine. Two healthy vines are enough for most home growers.

Test the soil first using a soil sampling kit. Texas A&M offers soil testing for a modest fee and will send you a report on your soil within two months.

Here's just a sampling of what else to plant during this busy month: lettuce, collards, mustard, kale, spinach, Chinese cabbage, cabbage, broccoli, Brussels sprouts, radishes, carrots, beets, fava beans, turnips, and peas.

The best way to determine emergence is by sampling infested plants. Do this by shaking branches that contain living scales and eggs over a piece of paper; examine for the presence of minute crawlers.

Avoid sampling unusual areas such as those near gravel roads, manure or compost spots, brush piles, or under eaves.

Set up a sampling station (don't forget the spittoon for designated drivers who want to hork out their sips) and make sure to put out cards from each brewery in case guests want to visit to pick up their fave.

Ideally, contact your state’s agricultural extension agency to find out the procedures for conducting a soil sampling and analysis to determine your lawn’s fertility needs.

To help reduce the confusion and increase your gardening pleasure, I've put together a "pretty close to accurate" sampling of top container plants. Please consult seed catalogs for plant varieties developed especially for container gardening.

It does not have to be an alcoholic drink, although many book clubs double as wine-tasting events. Guests enjoy discussing different beverages and trying new things. Sampling drinks can be a great ice-breaker as guests arrive.

When collecting a soil sample, take samples to a depth of 6-8 inches from at least ten spots in your garden. Avoid sampling areas that are not typical of the garden. Mix the samples together well and take a sub-sample to send to the lab.

The best means of determining your individual soil need is to have a soil test done by the Texas Agricultural Extension Service's Soil Testing Laboratory. Information on sampling techniques and prices is available from your county Extension office.
